Good features.
os:
Windows VistaFor a unit this cheap I'm impressed, it includes Usb, phone, input power cable and well featured software.
You can view input and output voltage/frequency and you can also log it all.
Only downside is you can't tell it to hibernate Windows rather than shut-down.
It includes Linux and Unix/FBSD drivers too.
The display is friendly but I haven't worked out how to permanently disable the beep.
Looks smart too.
Great Product
This is a great product for the price, the only issue I have is that the temp indicator on the control software seems to stay at 0c / 32F any one else have the same problem
Intelligent Shutdown Software
can someone help me find this software I've missed placed my cd and cant find it on the net :(
Not Bad
os:
Windows XPA neat little unit. The ultra-bright blue power button and LCD display are a bit gimmicky - the display seems to be hard-wired to display 230V regardless and cannot be turned off - but otherwise it's small and quiet and does the job.
The UPSilon software is also good, allowing you to monitor the voltage etc. as well as configure it to automatically shut down the PC after a power cut. (Note that the Communication Type has to be changed to "Mega(USB)" in the UPSilon Settings before it can communicate with the UPS.)
Review and how to hibernate
os:
Windows XPHad this a few days now
great price and good for a budget UPS
_________________________
to the person who wants to hibernate
use the "optional command to run" in settings of the ups software
to run a batch file.
Make a batch file called hibernate.bat or similar
and put the following command in the batch file.
%windir%/System32/rundll32.exe powrprof.dll,SetSuspendState
****** replace forward slashes with back slashes - the comments edited out backslashes when i tried to enter them the first time********
set the ups software run this batch file on power failure.
refer to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555569
for details about the command.
You may want/need to untick the "shutdown operating system" option so that the ups software doesn't also try to shutdown your pc.
I have this and "save files" unticked on my system.
Works on win xp and x64 (so I suspect it would work on win serv 2003)
not sure about vista.
Tested on my win x64 system
it seems to take the command about 40seconds before you see signs of hibernation process.
Also during testing I forgot that i set a delay for the UPS to turn off after shutdown
and it shutdown after i turned my machine back on a few seconds after the test (so beware when testing!)

Shame this has kettle sockets not normal mains but it is a budget UPS :)
Great little UPS
os:
Windows XPLovely little unit, I'm about to buy a 2nd.
Our industrial unit is on a farm, power by overhead lin, so we get lots of power-cuts (it's well tested now!).
It emails status messages out, so I can tell remotely when power is cut, even if only for a few seconds.
Only fault, after shutting down PC and UPS mine doesn't seem to restore power when mains is back on; otherwise it would get 5 stars.
Good for the price
os:
Windows XPSoftware supplied is Upsilon2000 by megatec.
Works ok so far. Did the trick above to do hibernation successfully.
I too can't figure out how to disable the beep, which is pretty loud. Not that I'd really care in a real power cut as long as it survives a short cut (e.g. 1min) and shuts down in a longer cut (e.g. 5 mins).
Where is the mains cable?
I have deducted one star from this otherwise very neat unit, because they don't provide the M-F mains cable to link the UPS to the PC.
This is really annoying as it means you get it out of the box and then discover you have to order or go out to buy the cable (not many of us have a M-F mains cable laying around).
The mains cable they DO provide is redundant, as you can use the one you have just unplugged from your PC. They really haven't thought this through.
Missing cables, use with Ubuntu
os:
LinuxI agree that the missing male-female kettle lead cables are annoying - didn't realise this when I ordered it.
I'm using this on an Ubuntu Linux desktop PC and the hardware works fine. I decided to use Ubuntu's NUT software to manage the UPS (perhaps it would have been better to use UPSilon as supplied but I have had problems with such software in the past when you upgrade Linux).
NUT doesn't support this UPS out of the box in Ubuntu but I've managed to get it basically working - see http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=5736992 for details.
Warning - Missing Cable
os:
Not ApplicableThe Plexus V650VA comes with everthing you need to protect your PC, except the damn cable to connect it.
I mean comeon - it's got spare fuses, a telephone lead, USB, kettle cable, CD and instructions how hard would it be just to put the cable you really need in the box. I mean everyone probably has a spare kettle lead but how many people have a male to female power extension lead lying around.
If you don't have said cable you are going to need one of these Quick Find: 47025
A part from the lack of the power cable I would give it 5 stars. I'm going to award it 3 stars on the grounds that the cable should be there in the first place and secondly it loses another star because if you have to get the other cable it's actually going to cost you more money than you thought you were going to have to pay.
Harsh by fair I say.
