bought the tomtom go520 after looking around for days on the net.this is a fantastic device.you can connect it to your car stereo so you dont have to keep turning the sound down.txt to speach reads out your txts on screen how cool is that.this tomtom does what it says on the box plug and play its that simple.went out in car of first time to brantingham woods took me straight there (not knowing where it was)and to the pub i was going.it also comes with 512mb internal menory so you can store some music on the tom tom so you need to buy a 2gb for ebuyer.it plays your music on the tomtom then with the fm transmitter it plays it through your car stereo.this is great value for money and a must have.

Tried the Tom Tom, one or two points on the reviews to consider, but on the whole I liked the strong build, good quality mount and the screen is just a bit bigger, which makes it easy with a man's chunky fingers.

Lots of configurations too, I like that.

The voice is neutral and not snappy or patronising like others.

You can download silly voices (cheaply too) for fun or record your own, but I'd rather hear a nice voice, not mine.

Menu quick to setup -no need to even read the manual, its that easy to put in a route and go.

Love the way the map moves and the 'car' arrow symbol stays still.

The car turning on the map as in others is too cartoony and confusing I found.

Voice prompts, steady and nicely timed, pre-warning you on Motorways nicely.

On complex motorway merges, it even advises the best lane to take to avoid stress and nasty boy racers hassling you for the last 100cms of road space left. My wife appreciated that as we used three motorways in the space of 15 minutes, she found it very reassuring indeed.

The device transmits to the car stereo, this is useful with the sporty low-profile wheels which make a lot of road noise and it makes it much easier to hear instructions. Note: In my french car, it is not needed, no road noise! It will also transmit MP3 music to the car radio too, and mutes it when voice cuts in. Cool.

If the PC is on, the GO 520 asks if you want to download and install the home PC software, very fast, no effort - it just does it - so no need to use the CD, just go for the latest on-line version, which you are going to need anyhow.

Voice recognition. Marvellous, understood all the local towns first time, we were impressed. It then plotted the route easily and very fast, but the M1 was closed, so a we checked the text route overview and avoided M1 by touching it, re-calculated in 5 seconds or less and we had the better route I would have gone for too.

I deviated through the old town to get petrol, the Go 520 was quite patient and as I left, it did not try to take me back to the bypass, assuming there was a reason I left it and plotted a simple route through the scenic old town, easy on a Sunday. We were impressed with the speed of re-calculation too, and it didn't annoy us whilst filling up with repeated 'turn around' requests as some other brands have been reported.

Overall, we like it -it was bought for the family, there are 3 drivers, soon to be a fourth - so the extra expense over the Tom Tom XL model was deemed worth it.

Phones - go to the web site and look for phones and check, http://www.tomtom.com/phones/compatibility/

The TomTom wins out hands down.

To the reviewer with N95... Mine works perfectly except for reading aloud SMS. Try update your phones firmware to the latest.

Go520 is awesome. Handsfree is better than i could have hoped and nav is faultless so far.

Buy one as the price is right at present.

Great features

I actually own the 720 and while I purchased this unit from PC World, I thought I should air my opinion.

The unit is quick in operation and the screen is very clear and highly detailed. After a short time I was quickly going through the menu's and exploring its features.
The biggest advantages of this model over its previous versions are the MP3 and FM transmitter. Transfering MP3 files over is easy with the software provided. I have already transferd over audio books and various albums for my travels. The FM bit is amazing, simply fine a radio frequency with no station (just tune till you find silence or hiss) then select the speaker option on the Tom Tom, select FM transmission and type in your selected frequecy from your car radio. A test signal is then sent to confirm you have the correct frequency. Confirm this and thats it!
I am able to listen to my favourite music through my car speakers and the music briefly pauses to allow the directions/warnings to be heard. You have the option of keeping the warnings and directions to the Tom Tom speaker while the music is transmitted too.

A great little unit and worth the money. Only difference between the 520 and 720 (that I can find) is that the 720 has 2gig of internal flash memory where the 520 has 512k.

Had one software crash so far and have emailed this to Tom Tom. Still waiting for a reply from them so cannot comment on their service yet.

Not so good with Nokia s60 (Symbian OS) phones!?
review by: Anonymous rating:

I wanted a simple solution to my current dilemma. 1) a hands free car kit 2) a useable navigation system.

I've tried various mobile phones with built in GPS and Navigation software and all of them suffer the same problems of too small a screen; and unusable (believe it or not) as a hands free device.

In short, the Tom Tom 520 is an excellent navigation device. Easy to plan a route, easy to follow (and fun too if you download the John Cleese voice pack!). However, it failed to perform well as a hands free Bluetooth kit. It may have been that it just doesn't work well with Nokia's s60 mobile phones (like the N95, 6110 Navigator etc). but callers couldn't hear me!

Other problems included failing to read out my txt messages; would only pair with my phone once every 10 attempts; you have to pay for traffic updates. It's not clear how you can amend the maps to include new road names (part of the new features of Map Share).

In conclusion this is an excellent navigation device. If you want to use the handsfree element then I would recommend you try it with your mobile before you purchase!

Go 520 or One XL?
review by: Anonymous rating:

The Go 520 music edition boasts many features including Ipod connectivity via the cable supplied and an FM transmitter to enable navigation announcements over the car stereo while playing music from the ipod or SD card. Both of these work well. I have given this product only three stars as using the GO520 as a hands-free interface to a mobile connected via bluetooth is a non starter. It will receive SMS messages and even read them aloud for you very well, but I have found it impossible to hold a conversation without shouting into the built in microphone from a short distance (30-50cm). TomTom and ebuyer have so far failed to provide a solution as there is no evidence of an input connection for an external microphone. If you can live without the music interface and a longer battery life, you might want to consider the One XL
