JVC KD-AVX33

I recently bought a used car and it had this head unit installed. The guy told me it was worth 400 nicker and he would leave it in if I bought the car. I personally think it's an awful lot to spend on ICE unless you spend a lot of time sitting around in the car or perhaps have kids who can be kept entertained by a DVD. If you're buying this for the kids then you'd better be prepared to splash out on rear screens because although the picture is excellent on the unit's screen it is far too small for rear seat passengers to watch. The sound is fantastic from the unit's inbuilt amplifier, especially when you play a DVD. Again you may need to splash out to upgrade your speakers though if you have standard manufacturer's speakers. They may handle the power but if you listen to this unit at high volume you will blow standard car speakers. The USB socket is on the back of the unit and mine has a cable with a sicket on it that I can plug a USB stick in to. I have tried plugging my MP3 player into the USB socket and the player doesn't read the files so I guess you need to use either a USB stick or a portable hard disc drive. Other input options include DVD - you can use a DVD full of MP3s with this unit, that allows you to put approx 40 - 50 albums on one disc. Stick it on shuffle and you won't hear the same song twice in a week. I have connected my Sony Ericsson mobile phone to the unit via Bluetooth and found I could make calls but the other person could not hear me so I will have to try and suss out where the microphone is if there is one. I haven't tried to use dual zones as I don't generally have anyone in the back of the car, so not sure if that works well though I don't think it would be of any use unless Dad was listening to the football whilst the kids in the back of the car were watching Shrek. All things said this is a high quality unit from a respected manufacturer. I would only take points off for price - although it's a very well made and a high spec unit I think it's overpriced. The price they are asking relates more in my opinion what I would expect to pay for a fairly decent home cinema amplifier which would get far more use. Because of this I give it 4 out of 5
