Cheap and Cheerful

had this 2 weeks now and more than happy for what I got for my money. Mine offered 482GB of free space. the lost capacity is down to the formatting and platter size. All drives are like this and you never get the full specified capacity. The casing is a robust, good quality plastic and it does not get too hot when the drives is in use. The product feels sturdy and well built and the performance with USB2.0 interface is impressive. This is an easy way to add storage or to back up your PC and data. Thanks Ebuyer

mine is 16MB cache

The drive I bought was 16mb cache. The retail box states minimum 8MB cache, probably because previous models were only 8mb and they use the same boxes. I ran a system test using Sandra (get from www.sisoftware.co.uk) and it came up as a Samsung 500GB SATA 16MB drive, so performance through USB will be as fast as you need it to be. All in all this is a great external drive and very good value for money. Any problems installing or afterwards and just ring the number in the manual, 01423 704715. I got through straight away when I had problems installing a Freecom DVB USB stick. Very good brand to go with in my opinion.

Cache

I previously purchased a Freecom 500GB aluminium cased external hard disk and I found that extremely reliable, quiet and efficient. Therefore i purchased a Classic 500GB as it's cheaper.
The Classic hard disk works well but there are a couple of things to note:-
It's a 8MB cache, not 16MB as advertised (even the Freecom website stated 16MB!)
The cover is in good quality plastic casing. Prob not an big issue unless you use it 24-7.
Although a couple of down side, but the reputation of Freecom and the product build quality (the Classic also uses Samsung hardisk) is really good and if you are using the hardisk purely for back-up, i would recommend it.

Cant go wrong with this at all.
Great value for the money.

I remember when 120 quid for a 200 gig drive was good value.

Crazy stuff.

Anyway, cant be faulted. The wee light is a lot less bright than the LEDs on all my other hard drives too, so you're not blinded at night time.

Easy to use and very quick!

Nice product at a nice price. Paid only 64 quid, great value.

Case is good quality black plastic, with shiny black front and back panels. 500GB light is a bit cheesy, but the drive is nice and quiet, it does get slightly warm after copying data to it for over 4 hours, but nothing to worry about.

It comes partitioned as FAT32 to ensure Mac and Windows compatibility, but this was quickly reformatted as 2 NTFS partitions to get over the 4GB max filesize limit(NTFS can be read by Mac OS X, but not written to).

Excellent HDD

I already own a Freecom 500GB silver drive (about 10 pounds more than this one) and i was going to buy another of that model initially but Ebuyer didn't have it in stock at the time i needed a new drive so i went with this one instead.

It didn't matter though as they both seem identical in terms of functionality - i can't tell any difference except maybe this one looks better in black.

My system information software 'everest' reports this drive as having a 8MB cache and the silver model as having 16MB BUT this seems to have zero effect on anything i do with both drives (file transfer speeds/cpu usage seem identical)

Overall, these external HDD's are very reliable, don't run too hot (this one seems cooler than the silver version to the touch even though im sure this one is not aluminium) and are sufficiently fast. Absolutely no problems or complaints here.

Its good but...

I've already owned the silver/aluminium version of this for 6 months and needed a second one. Bought this one for 64 GBP delivered from here, compared to the 78 GBP of the silver one.

This one is black plastic with some holes on the base and sides for a bit of ventilation, runs silent due to no fan.

The more expensive Aluminium version uses a Samsung SATA drive that automatically powers on/off when you plug/unplug (when the switch at the back is on).

This black version uses a Hitachi SATA drive and powers on/off via the switch at the back but does not spin down when connected etc. So its simply on/off via the switch, i think thats a bad thing.

Its still the smallest and neatest and probably most reliable of the cheap drives but i'm disappointed that it loses some function and uses a different brand of drive. I'll probably pass this one on and buy the silver version again.

But it does what it says and hasnt gone wrong yet, still recommend it above the others

Just plug in, switch on, change to NTFS if you want and off you go. Uses a Samsung Spinpoint T166 (in mine at least) which rates as one of the quietest and cooler running of drives. I get a transfer rate around 25 megabytes/sec between this and the internal PC hard drive.

I bought this from my local computer shop for 90 quid, I would have got it from ebuyer but I needed it the same day. It works fine with my Fujitsu Siemens V5505 Laptop.

I am a Mobile DJ and I needed some extra space on my laptop, But since laptop hard drives are expensive I got this instead. It has so far survived vibration, being knocked over and god knows what else. It also runs cool too, even when being use constantly for over 8 hours 3 times a week.
