Windows Home Server
os:
Windows XPIf your a dad like me and seem responsible for the maintenance and making backups of the home computers then you have to get yourself a home server built.Instead of having multiple files of the same pictures, music ect on my sons, daughters, and wifes computers all our media is now neatly placed on the home central server for all our home computers to access.
Setting up remote access to the home server is very simple. One benefit of remote access now gives my daughter easy access to safely back up school/collage project work remotly to our home server for safe keeping.
I would like to point out at this stage that I am not a very technical person when it comes to computers. All I can say is do not be worried by the word 'SERVER' You do not need loads of computer knowledge to get things up and running thanks to the very easy to follow wizards and help guides on the net.
CCL Computers (Google it) sell bundled mother boards complete with memory and processor already assembled and tested. All you have to do is to fit the mother board into a case, plug in your hard drive,DVD drive, attach a monitor, mouse and key board insert the home server DVD disc switch on and your on your way.(You do not need to keep the monitor, mouse or keyboard attached once the installation process is complete. It becomes a kind of stand alone unit.
The server will also back up each home pc as well as to duplicate files across several hard drives if fitted for safe keeping. One last thing I would recommend that you run your new server via a UPS. I purchased one from ebuyer.
Highly Recommended
I am very impressed in what Microsoft have done here to make it easy to install and setup for non IT professionals even though I am a Microsoft Certified Professional on Windows 2003 this was a lot easier to deploy as a server for backing up desktops and laptops with no fuss. I also experimented in other server roles that can be installed by going through the server rather than the remote administration console and successfully installed DHCP for automatic ip address deployment, DNS this works well as you no longer need to use Hosts files for local networking between computers and using a ethernet / wireless printer as i do at the moment and speeds up internet access with DNS caching and Routing and Remote access for VPN
Simply amazing!
I have been using this product since early beta and now run the RC version. All I can say is that it is a truly outstanding, simple OS to run and will make complex backup and restore sessions a thing of the past. WHS is ideal for anyone running a home network and basically requires no fuss to setup and run. It also allows seamless remote desktop and file access from anywhere.
ebuyer: Any idea when this will be in stock?
Using the beta - It's great!
Sure you can do most of this on a *nix box, but for "does what it says on the tin" backups, file sharing and web access you can't go wrong.
Couple of gotchas though; At the time of writing there is no 64 bit connector s/w to run the backups, and the PC remote access only works if the PC supports remote desktop (most Vista versions don't)
Completed Testing Release Candidate

Windows XPIf you are considering building a home server, which keeps ALL your computers backed up automatically and with FULL system restore capability if your client PC suffers a hard drive failure, then this BLASTS ALL other servers out of the water. Easy to install on minimal system hardware. You also get two other CD's; 1- to automatically setup your home PC and 2nd to restore your computer after replacing the failed hard drive. What more could you ask for?
Does what it says on the tin

Windows VistaI have to agree with the other reviewers in that this product does what it says on the tin.
As the owner of several systems, back ups are labourious but this software takes care of that with ease. I also used NAS drives but they tend to be limited on capacity and cause panic attacks when they cannot mount !! Also they are not all compatible with Vista (Netgear SC101 for example).
So the Windows Server is the ideal product and with the costs of hardware you can put together a pretty decent specification server with oodles of storage for a reasonable cost. Very expandable and extra storage a breeze to add. I installed Vista business for one PC because you can back up the whole OS but this product seems superior and at not to much extra cost.
A definate winner for me !!

Brilliant software

Windows VistaI specifically run a Mediasmart server, I was always impressed with the idea, but I was curios how MS would modify their populay servee 2003.
But i find it really easy to you. If you want to, you can set it up and just leave it. The remote access works really well. I find it useful to upload school files to the server.
For anyone who wants a home backup product with loads more features, then this is for you.

Windows VistaFirstly ordered late Wednesday eveing and arrived dinner time friday!!! And was down on the system to be delivered late next week. Well done ebuyer! Secondly got it installed in under an hour with my 2.1 Dual Core pc, only snag is that I put an 80gb hard drive in and you need a much bigger drive if you are depending on the back up feature, so soon as pay day comes 500GB is getting added to it. Had it running for a day and it is simply superb. Shame microsoft couldnt change the o/s load up screen from windows server 2003 (gives the game away really). Easy to manage, easy to install and the good thing is you only need a monitor and keyboard for install, after that remote desktop which is seamless! Will update when ive played around more!
