Decent for the money
os:
Not ApplicableProduct build is decent, although the remote looks and feels quite cheap. Bought to replace a dead Liteon, and although not as intuitive you soon find your way round it.
Worryingly the manual is for a DVR-5006 not the DHR-5001, but 99% still applies, although the manual (and the device firmware) indicate this is only DVD+R/RW compatible.
This is not the case and the device has happily recorded anything I've thrown at it including DVD-R/RW.
Quality on the 2 hour setting is good (about 2 hours 7 mins) and enough for most films. The longer settings (up to 6 hours) result in a predictable quality loss, but even the 6 hour setting is watchable for basic content.
Pleasant surprise is that the device seems to happily ignore macrovision copy protection from VHS tapes, useful if you want to back up your old videos before they disintegrate.
All in all, a decent buy.
TV Tuner is NOT Freeview
os:
Not ApplicableITem does exactly as promised, however just a note for all those out there - This only features a standard TERESTRIAL ANALOGUE TV reciever. this makes it completely useless in the UK without an additional sky/cable or freeview box plugged through it. I only managed to tune 2 channels in through analogue as the rest hae gone digital in my area.
Would have thought it should containa digital freeview reciever to actually make it usefull.
Some flaws, but some hidden bonuses.
os:
Not ApplicableFor it's price it's a good recorder, producing good quality from digital and analogue sources. However it's not without it's faults.
* The UI is a little cumbersome.
* The angle of detection of the remote is very narrow.
* The written instructions have some very poor English.
* Occasionally the sound output on playback disappears after extended use of the standby mode, this is corrected by restarting the power.
A few notes based on other comments.
* My unit did not ignore macrovision.
* It does play Xvid/DivX from CD & DVD. No mention of this in the manual that comes with it. The playback quality is good.
Does this support XVID?
does this device play back XVID as well as other standard video and audio codecs as well as DIVX, is there a way to upgrade the codecs?
Bit confused
Just got this today (super fast delivey, thansk ebuyer!), but a bit confused - burnt a couple of DVD-R discs, which the manual says it is compatable with, but when I've come to play them on 2 different laptops neither has worked, only a 'CD Audio' file is on the DVD, but it won't play.
This is a major problem for me, as I need this for work tomorrow, but also led to further confusion in that visiting the Vistron site, this appears to be a 5001 not a 5006. Will check the box when I get home.
But anyone any ideas on the failed recording? Was recorded via connection from Sky Plus box (Scart), and played fine in the recorder itself...
Thanks all!
Multiregion?
Does anyone know if there is a hack or firmware update for multi-region capability?
This is one major thing that this recorder lacks and I can't find anything for it on the net!
