Heads up to Mac users - also works with OS X

I bought this camera for my Mac (a non isight Powerbook) in the hope it might work with my machine. The fact it said 'driverless' implied it might be one of the newer USB UVC class cameras, which Macs equipped with at least Tiger (10.4) can use as an isight webcam without the need for drivers.

Mac users should be pleased to know this works. The system profiler reports it as:

USB Web Camera:

Version: 1.00

Bus Power (mA): 500

Speed: Up to 12 Mb/sec

Manufacturer: SiGma Micro

Product ID: 0xfaf5

Vendor ID: 0x0f35

I opened 'Photo Booth' and it works perfectly. You can also record movies from Quicktime etc. iChat and all the other web camera friendly apps should also be compatible. It has LEDs so you can use it in low light, which you can adjusted with a manual dimmer switch on the USB lead.

It's a bargain at the price and finally my Mac gets a webcam!

Model number is PC-300C

Works well - very good value

I got this simply because I keep losing drivers for the various gadgets I have. Worked exactly as it says on the box without drivers and will achieve up to 30 frames per second. Also, possibly as a side effect of its thrifty construction, the lens is not fitted with an IR filter. This means it will detect infrared light - so covering it with an IR bandpass (or visible light) filter instantly turns it into a infrared camera. Neat huh?

I bought this for a webcam for my weather site, and it does the job. One thing to comment on is that the "snake neck" does have limitations. I had the camera stuck to the window looking out, (like the image above, but camera facing the suction cup) but the neck will try and straighten itself if you bend it too far.

Image quality is good for a camera of this price, but remember you'll need an active USB extension cable if its far from the PC. I originally used a "normal" 5M USB extension and lost quality.

If the neck was a little more flexible this would have had 5 stars.!!

OSX Compatibility - Wont work with iChat or Skype
review by: Anonymous os: Max OSX

After posting my review on OSX Compatibility I found this camera refused to work with Skype or iChat (causing them to hang). The logs showed:

kernel USBF: 34023.705 AppleUSBOHCI[0x2610800]::Found a transaction which hasn't moved in 5 seconds on bus 0x1b, timing out!

Although driverless and worked with Photobooth, it looks like it wont be an OSX cam after all. Sorry for my rash post!

Will have to hand this to my parents to use on their PC.

Turn your PC into a Dalek

bought this randomly as a webcam to try a few things - it has a suction cup which only sticks to a few types of surface which can be a bit annoying. But I discovered that glass, and laptop lids work quite well. Combined with the white LEDs which are built into the ring around the camera lens you can transform your laptop into a dalek. Much fun can be had in the office. Plus it takes pictures too. Doesn't come with any software but then it's six quid.

Does not appear to work with Skype

Hi ,

I have just got this camera.

The drivers install fine and under "my computer" if you click on the camera you can see the image which works well.

However I cannot get a picture in skype - ie the worlds most common conferencing software. A warning on the product description would have been useful.

Perhaps it does work and I have done something silly - if anyone has a suggestion that would be appreciated. I have upgraded skype to latest 3.8, and have used other cameras before without any hassles at all. I have selected the camera as the usb camera etc..

When I attempt to change settings this does not do anything.

Windows is SP2

Will try rebooting but hopes are not high!

I know it's a cheapy, but at present this is basically useless for me.
