Amazing for the Price!

os: Windows XP

I bought this for my young daughter because I wanted something that had a good feature list but was cheap enough not to worry if it got lost/stolen/broken.

Having spent a while setting this up, I can thoroughly recommend this mp3/4 player at this price!

The unit is small and very light-weight. The outer pink is a metalised coated plastic and the white parts plain plastic.

Initial setup was easy - it comes with a couple of test files on there for you to checkout, but I plugged it into my XP machine and it came up as a removeable USB drive.

The interface is clunky - this is no iPod! Read the reviews on the other Stage media players as they appear to all be the same. Basically you move up and down with the Next/Prev buttons, the (top) M button selects. Hold M to return to the main menu. Hold the centre button to do a soft-off/on. Use the switch on the top for real power-off/on.

The music player is ok, but as before navigation is a bit weird. It's a folder-view which means you can organise your files (music/video/etc) into a sensible arrangement to find things. It seems to list files in the order they were written to the (USB) disk rather than alphabetically though. Press the Next button and it will cycle through the folders so you can keep searching.

The video player works well - surprisingly well. Files are in AMV format so I downloaded "AMV Convert Tool" from http://www.mympxplayer.org/ and this works well. Combined with an FLV codec (I used ffdshow) you can download FLV videos from YouTube and convert these onto the player... great for pop videos!

The FM radio ... worked. It did an autoscan and found stations and stored them. No RDS or editable names that I could find which is a shame.

Can't comment on the other functions - Game (Sudoku), Reader (ebooks/txt files), Picture Browser, Voice Recorder - but suffice to say that for under 14 quid delivered you really can't go wrong.

The one thing this player needs is a serious update of it's interface and it would be a steal, even at twice the price. It does work but just takes some getting used to.

If you're worried about storage size then get the larger model but 1Gb is plenty for quite a few hours of albums/video and the USB mode is fast enough to make synching it very quick.
