Great little case!

os: Windows Vista

I have used asus barebones before, and love them! They are so easy to use, and come half built already!!

The only extras you need are an OEM AM2 processor (it says upto 5600, but iv installed a 6000 and had no problems with it), memory, hdd, and cd drive!

I disagree with the comment, i didnt find the case fiddly at all, but then i am used to dealing with small cases! I had vista up and running 30mins after opening the boxes, easy to set up (tho i did need the drivers from the supplied CD).

I also installed a BluRay/HDDVD combo drive and both formats work flawlessly with Arcsoft TotalMedia. I really cant faulter this product, it's surpassed all my expectations!

I also like the fact that it has a cover to hide the memcard slots/front usb ports, as i find these generally aesthetically displeasing, and the case is very pretty! The only gripe i have is that the power button is adjacent to the eject button, and i have accidentally pressed the power button instead of the eject button, but u learn this pretty early on!

All in all, great case, great value for money!

Blu-ray Playback - SOLVED
review by: Anonymous os: Windows Vista

After having a generic response from ASUS around Blu-ray Playback being Jerky I decided to upgrade the processoer from an AMD Athlon x2 64 4200 to a AMD Athlon x2 64 3Ghz 6000 and Blu-ray and HD-DVD playback is smooth.

The machine gets quite noisy due to the faster processor getting a lot warmer but it's not that bad.

Hope this helps.

Blu-Ray Playback
review by: Anonymous os: Windows Vista

I bought one of these back in May and added an LG Bluray/HD-DVD combi drive but playback is jerky.

I'm using a AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 4200+ 2.20GHz processor and I'm thinking I may need to get a faster proc.

Anybody got any ideas?

Neat, quiet, but a bit fiddly
review by: Anonymous os: Linux

Built a system with Athlon-64 LE-1600 (134747), and installed Ubuntu 7.10. It works fine. Assembly is a bit fiddly due to the size of the case, but the small size also means the final thing looks very neat and tidy. A CPU cooler is included, and is nearly identical to the one with the AMD box kit. Curiously, it seems to cost no more to buy a nearly equivalent CPU without the cooler! The hardest parts is removing and replacing the cover: this takes lots of jiggling and pushing. The front panel buttons are really too small, and require too much pressure to activate. I would also prefer not to have a cover over the front ports, but that is the way it is. Overall, I am positive: it is a nice box at a good price.

Blu-Ray Playback Jerky
review by: Anonymous os: Windows XP

I bought this barebone system because it had an HDMI interface and would play blu-ray titles as per it's description. The most inspiring attraction was the fact that it's ability to play blu-ray titles will result in huge savings for a capable graphics card if i have to buy one. So i took the plunge thinking i would bless the barebone system with above average components to enable me watch blu-ray titles which was my main reason for buying it in the first place.

I was completely disapponited that after installing all components playback of blu-ray titles was jerky. Sometimes it even fails to enable HDCP when you try to play a blu-ray title and stalls.

The only reason i can attribute to this is the fact that the integrated graphics card which although was below the minimum required spec, passed the cyberlink's blu-ray advisor test. The most recent ATI drivers have also been installed.

A way around this would be to install a capable graphics card, but a pci-express x16 slot is not provided for on the motherboard.

My system components are as follows:

Processor: AMD64 Athlon X2 +5000

Memory: Kingston 2x1GB DDR2 667MHz

Harddrive: Samsung SpinPoint HD501LJ 500GB SATAII

Player: LG GGW-H20L Blu-Ray Disc Re-Writer & HD DVD-Rom

I believe the above spec should effectively play blu-ray titles flawlessly but this isn't the case.

The system would run most other application brilliantly but this isn't the purpose for my purchase.

If there's something i'm not doing rightly any help would be highly appreciated.

I am giving a 2 star rating because of the above cons.

BLU RAY PLAYBACK, PROBLEM NOT SOLVED
review by: Anonymous os: Windows XP

Just to let the guy who reviewed this product after upgrading to AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+ as saying playback problem solved has not actually been solved! I have also upgraded to AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+ and player still struggles to play some HD/ BLU RAY titles. It however plays a few though without jitters. The AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+ is just about at par with the capability of playing HD/BLU RAY titles as you can actually see some jitters (once in a while) whilst playing some titles.
