Why the noise?...COS ITS GOOD!
review by: Anonymous os: Not Applicable

I have been fitting LITEON drives for a several years now, because they are the best economy drives around. If they get flaky, clean-em and forget-em for another year! I have not yet had one die of natural causes in 4 years and nigh on 200 drives! (I fit loads for other people).

The noise is actually why they are such good readers/writers. Most DVD/CD use a weighted flywheel to reduce resonance, especially from disks that are unbalanced, disks with sticky labels on them can be terrible. An OK solution but it has limits, resonance is not eliminated, it is just reduced pro-rata. (A bit like the lump of concrete used to damp vibration in your washing machine, copes most of the time but not always).

LITEON use a hollow flywheel loaded with a few ball bearings. As the drive spins up, the bearings take up positions according to the resonance emanating from the disk, in effect COMPLETELY balancing the disk; even if it's a really badly labelled disk. (I draw the line at a slice of toast but it would damn well try). The price of this bit of jiggery pokery is that you always get some noise from the bearings, tho a well balanced disk will settle quickly. The bonus of the system is that LITEON drives can often R/W disks that others cannot - they have much greater balancing capability than the weighted flywheel.

Earlier drives seem to have had a larger wheel cavity and many were returned as faulty because they rattled quite loudly even before you pulled em out the box! But hell did they read and write and they still do! My oldest DVD drive has written around 1200 DVDs and 2500 CDs (God only knows how many it's read) and that in a home with several hairy pets and dust and ash from solid fuel heating. It has had four clean outs so far and writes as fast and clean and reliably as it always did.

So if you can tolerate a bit of weird noise in return for a drive that gives superb R/W performance and longevity at a rock bottom price - get a LITEON!

If It RATTLES - LOVE IT!

The first one ebuyer shipped was faulty, i tried everything to make sure it was a fault. ebuyer sent out a replacement quickly, with extra packaging which suggests the first one got damaged in transit.

Installed, loaded drivers automatically, burned a dvd quite quickly, and it hardly makes a sound.

Well worth it!

Drive Noise
review by: Paul Crisp os: Windows XP

Several commentators have mentioned drive noise in relation to these drives. I experienced the same problem, but found that much of it was due to the front plastic facia of my PC case vibrating when the spin-speed reaches a certain frequency. I fixed this problem with a few strategically placed self-adhesive felt pads on the inside of the front case facia surrounding the drives.

Prompt delivery as usual from Ebuyer. OEM received as expected and I found it very easy to install as a second burner in my Dell. Runs fine if a little noisy but for the price it is more than adequate.

Front bezel is slightly confusing, has "DVD+R" on the front, despite that, seemed to burn a DVD-R fine. Seems alright, slightly noisy when burning at full speed, guess that's to expect from 20X.

Ebuyer delivery was spot on as usual. It was bought as a replacement for an NEC that had stopped spinning.

Installation was quick and easy, note this is an OEM so no instructions were in the box.

No issues with speed or burning.

Just couldnt believe the noise of this unit.

Pretty good value for money.

Bought this a week ago. Comes with Nero essentials 7 which is good. Tried burning a few DVD's and CD's +/- at different speeds worked perfect however iv had one problem with it. Whenever i erase a DVD, once it has been erased it does not eject the DVD back out, to get it to eject the DVD the computer has to be reset.
