eSATA and SATA
review by: Matthew Charman os: Windows XP

The previous poster is incorrect.

eSATA is an I connector.

SATA is an L connector.

An internal cable will have an L connector at BOTH ends, as motherboards and internal drives are SATA connections.

An external cable will have an eSATA connector both ends.

A cable with an eSATA cable one end and a SATA the other can be used to connect an external drive to the internal connection on a motherboard OR it can be used to connect a laptop or PC case eSATA connector to an internal SATA drive with a seperate power supply (this is the common way that I data rescue from internal SATA drives!),

Works well if configured properly

I'm using this cable between a cheap caddy that has a dual USB/eSATA interface and a media bay that has an eSATA interface connected directly to the motherboard (quickfind 136402).

At first it did not work, the drive was not detected properly by the BIOS. The solution is to force the drive into SATA 1 mode by placing a jumper on the pins. Look at your HDD manufacturers website if you are unsure where to place the jumper. It was called "OPT1" on my Western Digital disk.

The reason for this is eSATA does not work with SATA II unless you have a 'proper' eSATA port with boosted voltages - i.e. not just connected to the motherboard SATA port.

After doing this it works flawlessly! The drive is detected by windows and transfer speeds are the same as with an internal SATA disk.

Recommended if you use an external disk for backups and want the backups to take less time.

eSATA vs SATA
review by: Anonymous os: Not Applicable

FYI

eSATA (External) is the "I" on both connections and SATA (Internal) is "I" for Motherboard and "L" for Drive.

If you are external this cable is likely to be the one you want. If not choose SATA.

not L-shaped SATA connection
review by: Anonymous os: Not Applicable

FYI. The SATA connections are just flat (as shown in the picture). Not L-Shaped which is what I need to connect my SATA HDD to my dell E521... What is the name of the connector I need
