The EEE PC SSD..
It is true that the EEE PC _DOES_ have a limited life SSD drive, and it WILL wear out..
You can easily verify this yourself by looking at the default linux install that comes with it.. it doesn't do any logging at all and it doesn't have a swap partition..
The reason it doesnt have those two things is that they both write to the drive almost continually and would wear it out too fast..
The drive uses hardware write levelling so that writes to the drive will be spread about the flash locations resulting in even wear to minimize the damage to one part of the flash and prolong the drive, but it will wear out eventually and will do so faster if you install another OS and configure it badly.
Will it outlast the device? That depends on what you use it for and if you are clever enough to configure any other OS you install correctly.. For light use as its designed for then it will easily last 3-5 years i'd say which for me will have outlived the device..
Still hasnt stopped me ordering one though as this thing looks brilliant.. and aside from that you can always boot from SD or USB if the drive does get worn out in the years ahead..
Go AWAY
stop copy/pasting fud. The truth of the matter is it will last the life of the machine. Imbacil.

LinuxI got my black eeepc this morning. Not packed in a plain box but it arrived safely. I was up and running in minutes, connected to the web, msn and skype, no problems. It's dinky but you can just about touch type on it (if you know how to) and it appears very well built. The balance is a bit iffy if you're not resting on the keypad but it's not an issue.
It's going to be a popular thing. the next cheapest thing this size is a Vista bloatware loaded item at 500 quid - this is much more fun to use. Buy one.
Rubbish!
Write cycles are not an issue. SSD technology has come a long way in the 15 odd years since those (estimated) figures were quoted.
The SSD drive in the eee will outlast the useful life of the machine by a long time, and with its lack of moving parts I'm prepared to say that it will be considerably more reliable and sturdy in the long run than a conventional laptop hard disk!
Stop Worrying and just buy it! Excellent Piece of kit!

Not ApplicableI have been playing with my Asus Eee for nearly 2 days now and I have to say its one of the best devices ive ever used. It is small very light and is literally the size of standard hardback book (Harry Potter is double the size!!)
Im a sales rep by trade and got this to surf why travelling around. it is so small I have been able to fit it in my briefcase without an issue what is a bonus.
The machine boots up within 15-20 seconds and has nearly everything that you could want for basic duties. picked up several wireless internet points so very effective and connected immediatley without issue or any technical advice needed. It was so simple I didnt even have to look at the instructions. as already stated in another review its nearly "idiot proof"
Open Office works fantastically and I was able to log into my email and check my spreadsheets that get sent daily from work what is fantastic and a lot more user friendly than using a PDA ect.
I cant really fault the machine in anyway so far as I have been able to do everrything I wanted from watching youtube videos why on a train to ftp'ing to various servers why I was at customers premises.
Its a beauty and a real head turner. I was stopped twice on the train by to women who asked if it was a real laptop so it has extra benefits too ;)
Bottom line is it does everything out the box that some full windows laptops cannot do without extra configuration.
Superb next day delivery from Ebuyer and City link. Get it why you can as it will sell out very quickly!

LinuxJust received mine and what a great little machine this is, ordered it from Ebuyer at 1945pm and it arrived at 0830 next day, superb service. This is really a great lightweight laptop.....buy one, you cannot go wrong.
Question about the battery
Hi,
I researched quite a bit on that "thing" and nowhere it is mentioned that it will included a 3 cells battery of 2400w/h..... Is there a mistake?
Can someone actually confirm the type of battery this computer is delivered with?
On the laptop itself, I tried it very quickly in a shop yesterday and I have to say that it looked really promising.... Not sure if I'll buy one as I already have a small laptop but I would definitely recommend it to a first time buyer
Can't help but love it

LinuxI have just bought one and it is brilliant. It picked up my wireless box at 100% without me having to do anything and displayed web pages perfectly. Have used Unix but not linux in past.
This device is limited but very portable. The manual comes with instructions for putting XP2 on, and removing unwanted extras.
Very large amount of free software for Linux.
I love it just for the size, price, ease of use.
I reserve judgement on Linux until I have delved and tweaked it.
Openoffice is very similar MS office and easy to use.
ps I bought the black one. I also had a good look at reviews before choosing one over a cheap laptop.
ASUS EEEPC701 question
they state battery is Battery - Lithium-Ion (3Cells) 2400mAH
anyone confirm this ?
not a 5200mAH (4 cell)
It just had to be done ..... ;)
I don't really need one of these but i had to have one !!! Next day delivery (watch this space)
OLPC next hahaha !!
Seriously looking at this unit there has been a price hike since the initial speculation but looking at the prices over the pond $399 its almost spot on
given the exchange rate and all the ones i have seen were white in colour, is there a price premium for black? Perhaps ppl will think (in white) its the new Macbook Ultra :)
Take a look over at Youtube there are demonstrations of the unit running XP and VISTA.
The unit will boot from USB so the choices are numerous! USBFlash, HDU, CD/DVD?
But who needs windows when you have linux!
