I don't often write reviews, but the Nuvi 770 deserves a few minutes.

This thing works out of the box. Plug it in and off you go (although there is a slight lag whilst it finds satellites for the first time). Favourites & 'home' can be stored as with other sat navs.

Satellite signal is strong & the FM receiver (for TMC traffic data) is very useful (although reception is a bit patchy at times) and has already navigated me around some nasty jams on the M4&M25. PLEASE NOTE - if you have a heat reflective / heated windscreen, you may encounter problems with GPS & TMC reception - be warned.

The FM broadcast (so you can listen to MP3s over your car radio) works well, but when driving long distances it's difficult to find a frequency that isn't already being used. The M25 is awful! The unit has 1 slot for standard SD cards. Internal free memory was just under 1Gb (although I haven't tried copying music to this).

The power cable and fm aerial for TMC are fused just before the plug that goes into the cradle. i.e. you don't have to plug stuff directly into the Nuvi each time you put it into the cradle (as opposed to some TomToms). Power cable is a good length & is straight rather than curled. My cigarette lighter is down by the handbrake, but there is still enough cable to reach the screen without it getting in the way.

I've been using an old IPaq with TomTom3 on it for the last 3.5 yrs, and unfortunately the layout of buttons & access to options on the Nuvi doesn't seem as intuitive as TT3. The gains on the Nuvi far outweigh any annoyances though.

The Nuvi also contains a handsfree kit (you need bluetooth on your mobile) & works well, although my mobile battery goes flat a lot quicker however, even when I'm not on calls a lot. Points of interest also have phone numbers included, so you can call them using the Nuvi if req'd.

The mount included is a suction mount, with an additional adhesive disc, that can be used if you don't want marks on your screen. Arkon do a vent mount (you'll have to buy it separately) which is ok, but not great.

For helping me out of jams, being easy to use, plus I can now listen to MP3s, & have hands free the Nuvi gets 5*s. Personally, I think it's worth the cash to get all the extras.

P.S. Many thanks to ebuyer for sorting out a delivery problem. V efficient as always.

I bought this because I go on holiday to America so it's handy to have rather then paying 10 dollars extra a day to rent one.

The main difference between this and the TomTom range, other then the fact it comes with US and Canada maps, is that it's more designed to work in the states....for example it won't tell you to take the exit in the UK like a TomTom will, it will tell you to stay in the left hand lane, which in America takes the exit. So you have to look at the screen a bit more until you get used to what it's trying to tell you, which doesn't take long.

The speed camera updates are good and so far have been accurate, being a Garmin you can also update it with free speed camera updates from 3rd party sites rather then paying the subscription to Garmin but it's up to you.

Being dark coloured I did find on hot sunny days it sucks up the heat sitting on the windscreen which makes the battery last only 20 to 30 mins, which is easily avoidable by having the air conditioning/cooler set to windscreen so it cools the back of the unit.

Overall with all the extra's inc. language, currency and measurement converters etc i'm really happy with it!
