Wonderful Drive

I recently wanted a large external drive to house my growing music collection as it was getting rather neglected on the dvd's

I thought about building my own, using a hard drive and caddy, when I saw this, for a lot cheaper than I could build one.

So I bought one. And i was not disappointed. Ebuyer did their usual excellent service, even though I opted for the super saver delivery, I had it in 48 hours of ordering.

On getting it out of the box, i felt that this was a soild product, it's quite chunky but it's quite elgantly designed, although it will not be stackable as I had hoped for.

It has a small foot print and looks very nice in the matt black. Compliments my computer case vey nicely.

Setting up took literally less than 20 seconds. Plugged in, recognised, and software installed, as quickly as you can say it. A quick re-boot (not really necessary) and everything was working fine. The manual shows it in 3 pictorial steps, but is so obvious that even the most technologically challenged could do it.

All the leads are provdide, the mains adaptor came with a eurostyle two pin plug, but an english 3 pin one is provided, just slip off the euro on and slide on the english 3 pin.

It comes already formatted to NTFS so needs nothing doing to it in that regards

It' very very quite, I cannot hear a thing, even when writing and reading simultaneously.

It is remarkably quick too, probably quicker than my internal WD caviar and Maxtor drives. I copied 45 Gb of data from an internal drive to it in under 6 minutes and a full DVD of mp3's took about 3 from my Pioneer 16x dvd drive. When running the bright white at the front flashes, to let you know. The light is I think slightly too bright though and can be a bit of a distraction

It also stays very cool, even being on for well over 36 hours now, it's still barely warm.

It's nicely configurable for the power down options, using the maxtor manager programme that comes ready installed on the drive. A single touch of the cleverly hidden button on the front automtically runs this programme once installed and automatically starts the back-up procedure. You can customize this button to run any programme though, such as explorer etc..

All in all it is a very nice drive, and would definately recommend it to others, especially at this price for it's capacity. I give it five stars, pity I can't just deduct 1/4 of one for the lack of stackability and that bright white light.

Excellent Buy

Bought one of these because my IOMEGA 500G was full and needed more.

Out of the box, an unimpressive (almost shabby) looking plastic lump hiding quite a tidy Maxtor IDE drive. Plugged straight in to Windows XP and Vista without much of a moan and immediately recognised without the need for drivers. Power lead (with changeable euro and UK pins) and USB cable are all supplied, so just plug in and enjoy.

I immediately deleted all the one touch software (freeing up an additional 233 MB real estate) and ended up with 698GB of NTFS storage...loverly.

Not the quickest on the market (sustained 23MB/Sec) but deathly quiet (need to have your ear about 1 foot away and strain really hard) Compared to the IOMEGA that I can hear thrashing away accross the other side of the room, its impossible to tell if its on just from the sound, however, thats what the garish white LED behind the tacky plastic button is for.

Well worth the money but stick it out of sight.
