Ships with keyboard & mouse
I assumed this wouldn't have a keyboard or mouse but was pleasantly surprised to find mine shipped with both. This may be common HP practice but I wasn't aware of it..
Great Little SBS 2003 Server
os:
OtherInstalled 2 of these in the last week as SBS 2003 R2 servers. Normally I would spec at least SAS disks and RAID 5 and was concerned it might not be upto the RAID 5 15K rpm SAS disk standard.
However I added 4 Western Digital RE2 disks (320Gb in one (qf 138544), 500Gb in the other (qf 137329)) and setup as RAID 10. These disks are WD's enterprise disks and with no SCSI spec disks market to protect are a very good price with 5 year warranty and 1.2 MTBF.
Remember to buy 4 SATA cables (I got Belkin qf 57660 - I wanted to use 4 the same so removed the one HP one and drive) I then added 4*1Gb Crucial ECC memory.
Main concern on setup was loading the RAID driver as there is no floppy drive and I read only HP USB floppy drives or using NLite will do the trick (did buy Freecom USB floppy in case though). I even called HP and they confirmed this. However on both machines I first run the Quick Start CD that booted and told me that it didn't support the RAID in the server and to reboot with the OS CD. This I did and somehow, I don't now how, it loaded up the correct Windows 2003 driver with no F6 or anything - still stumped as to how it did it, but on completion I checked and it was the latest one! I also updated the BIOS afterwards and also downloaded the HP RAID Manager software (search on ML110 in Drivers/Software on the HP site) so I could check the RAID status and configure some event handling.
I need not have worried about disk performance of the 7200rpm WD SATA drives. With the Striping and mirroring of RAID 10 they were fast, damn fast!
In fact the WD disks are so cheap compared to SAS, I bought another one just to leave on the shelf as a spare! Oh, I used Seagate 750Gb external drives for backup.
If you have a small workgroup go for it!
Great little server for Solaris 10 / SUSE 10 SP1
os:
OtherI bought this server through a trade contact in the basic spec as I could get for less money than the G4 version, but has larger 4mb CPU, larger disk and SATA DVD. I normally buy everything through Ebuyer so thought I would post this review anyway.
I have it up and working with SUSE 10 SLES SP1 and Solaris 10 x86 08/07 on two seperate disks, one with each OS installed.
It was no problem at all to get working with the standard SUSE SP1 distro DVD 64 bit version. Just bear in mind that some applications , perhaps most notably Adobe Reader and Flash don't work.
For Solaris 10 it is not on the HCL, nor does it mention any support on HP.com. However it is very similiar to the DL160 so to install Solaris 10 x86 Release 08/07 ...
You will need to use the default non GUI installer and you will need NIC drivers!
The chipset is a Broadcom device so the driver pack for the DL160 works no problem. Just install the bcme drivers using pkgadd and your away having edit/created the usual config files.
I also found that due to using a 22 inch screen, kdmconfig got a bit confused (as I usually find) in sensing the screen, keyboard and mouse. Once installed, I ran kdmconfig and set the screen res , use the Xsun Xserver and a generic keyboard and mouse. The Java desktop then launched without problem after restarting the cde-login service via the svcadm command.
All in all a great server, at a very good price from Ebuyer.

Excellent!
os:
OtherI bought one of these about a month ago along with 1GB of extra memory and a pair of 750GB extra SATA hard disks to run Windows 2008 Server.
I'm really impressed, excellent built quality, very very quiet (would make an excellent home server) and a great price. E-Buyer were also excellent, and the server arrived the day after I ordered it.
I couldn't get the SATA RAID which is included with the motherboard to work for the Windows 2008 installation due to lack of drivers... other reviewers have perhaps had more luck.
Software
os:
Not ApplicableNo it doesn't come with server software - for the price you wouldn't really expect it to.
After the POST fan noise, it is quieter than my Dell desktop PC.
Added another 3x1GB HP memory and 2 extra Western Digital 500GB drives (remember to buy a SATA cable for each additional drive you install)
Windows Server 2008
os:
Not ApplicableFor those that need it the SATA drivers for Windows Server 2008 are available from the following URL:
http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareIndex.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodNameId=3577715&prodTypeId=15351&prodSeriesId=3577708&swLang=8&taskId=135&swEnvOID=4022#113214
Download them to a USB Stick and install them during the setup. Easy-peasy.
I purchased a pair of Samsung HD753LJ 750GB drives (code 139739) setup as RAID1 and 1GB extra ram (140153).
Delivered the day after ordering. Great little server.
A powerful workstation system
os:
OtherI have had one of these for a few months now. This is a cracking deal, and if you are tech savvy you can do a bit of work and configure it as a Xeon workstation like I did.
This means
- putting in a PCIe 1x graphics card to replace on-board graphics (note that 16x is NOT supported), I got a Galaxy Nvidia GeForce 7300 GT with 128mb DDR3 for mine.
- a sound card, i used Creative SoundBlaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio PCI-Express OEM (ebuyer code 129740)
- more RAM, a good 2GB or 4GB should do it; but you can do 8Gb if you want.
- you can pick up a cheap SAS/6i RAID controller card from Dell
- 2 x 15k RPM SAS disks in RAID 0
(And a copy of windows server 2003 configued as a workstation).
And y'all set guys! (don't forget to hold on to your seat!)
Nice
os:
LinuxThese are great machines for basic servers. if you don't require too much from the server but want one that is always responsive, we run these hosting about 100 php based websites each and they handle the load lovely.
the only niggle i had with them is that the current debian kernel doesn't support the network cards out of the box.
however ubuntu does, so thats ok.
we have just ordered another system, this time to install windows 2003 on it, but have been running 3 under ubuntu for the past couple of months and find them to be quiet and reliable.
Unbeatable Value
os:
OtherMuch better buy than the ML115 featured, faster processor, more RAM, bigger HDD, seen the xeon processor advertised at 123 quid! Ordered 2 x 2GB ECC RAM modules & 1 x 1 GB to bring it upto 6GB for 70 quid, great for virtual machines. HP doing a promo until end of august for the 100c remote management card, if you buy one (about 140)you can send the invoice for the proliant server and the card and they will send you a cheque for the price of the remote card, this model is on the claim form, just the risk of buying the card in the first place.
