Good value Shuttle upgrade
os:
Windows XPI have a Shuttle SK22G2 running XP Home and Ubuntu Hardy Heron Linux. I wanted to improve DVD replay, and try out the latest compiz desktop on Linux. Saw this card on e-buyer, seemed latest technology at a good price so..
The card was supplied with a CD of drivers and 3 adaptors, DVI-VGA, Composite?with 3 coloured leads and a yellow adaptor for the tv out socket. The card is well made for the price, low profile and passively cooled, fitted into the Shuttle in two minutes flat. The install instructions were confusing, didnt seem to correspond well with the Windows install new hardware program, and the install from the supplied CD kept crashing during the install. In the end installed drivers downloaded from Sapphire website. Not very impressed with documentation overall.
Once everything was working, very pleased with this card. DVDs are sharp and clear with a 3D quality to them, desktop has speeded up and Google Earth is superb - very fluid and easy to use.
In Linux, managed to install ATI driver using instructions at http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Ubuntu_Hardy_Installation_Guide
in about twenty minutes. Card works well in Linux and compiz desktop has no problems with it.
Verdict: this card is a great improvement on onboard graphics. Well made, quiet due to passive cooling, and solid value for money from e-buyer. Pleased and pleasantly surprised with my purchase, I'm off to play another DVD!
Does not come with HDMI adapter
os:
Windows XPBought this to use in my HTPC to help play Blu-rays and HD-DVDs which it does very well. Unfortunately it doesn't come with a HDMI adapter which was disappointing as I'm sure most people will be using it with a plasma/lcd tv. Luckily I had one spare from my 8800gt which works fine.
HTPC
os:
Windows XPBought this as the graphics card for a media centre PC. I've not tried it with any HD source yet. Once I had managed how to find the 50Hz settings in the catalyst control panel it performed flawlessly.
I don't intend on playing games with this card and doubt it's capable... Good enough for its intended purpose though.
great item
os:
Windows XPthis is a great graphics card, i brought it because my motherboard graphics were terrible... it is an exelent improvement but the only fault i have is that you have to have ur primary monitor in the vga port, which doesnt matter much if u have a vga monitor but if u have a dvi monitor u have to get an adapter for the vga slot.
great item ebuyer
Value you for money?
Well yes it is value for money as long as you don't want to pass audio through to hdmi as it doesn't come with the active dvi-hdmi convertor.
Will work at 1080i but you may need to force to 1080p and to decent refresh rates
if already got a dedicated soundcard then perfect for a move towards high def content.
3 stars are given due to the poor information you can get for this card, and no active dvi-hdmi adapter
Is this low profile?
Can any one tell me if this card is low profile and/or passivley cooled?
I ask as I noticed that the 2 reviews previous involved HTPC setups ..
