How do they do it for the price

os: Windows Vista

Well, this was a very uninspiring advert from Ebuyer. I wasn't even sure if it came with a PSU. However I bit the bullet and was glad I did.

It comes with driver CD (for win98) USB cable (tiny) and PSU (complete with kettle lead). 4 Metric AND 4 Imperial Screws for scrwewing down HD or DVDs. It even comes with a screwdriver ! One thing it doesn't have is a fan, however there is a place for one.

Installation is simple. For a DVD: Take off top. Take out front panel. Insert drive. Attach power and IDE. Screw down drive. Screw on top. Took me about 3 mins (2 of those was working out wither the DVD has metric or imperial thread holes). Same for an HD just leave the front panel in place.

Works like a dream on Vista x64.

Enjoy......

This is a bargain. Ordered with super saver delivery and it still arrived next day. Works a treat. Everything you need included and nice simple design makes it easy to fit HDD or CD. Up and running in minutes. No fan fitted, but perfectly OK for CD/DVD

os: Max OSX

Just tried alt-booting from a 10.4 install DVD on an old G3 iMac (600MHz slot loader 2001). The Mac bootloader screen finds the DVD on USB and successfully boots the 10.4 installer.

Driverless desktop operation in OS 9.2.2 and OSX 10.4.11 also tested.

Nice.

Screws don't fit

Bought this item because of good reviews, I found that the screws do not fit my dvdrw drive. I guess I have to find other screws that will keep my drive secured in the enclosure

Earlier query regarding the products details.

Firstly it is USB2, as you can see from Ebuyer's title for the enclosure! Regarding Firewire I'd be staggered, at this price, if it existed; furthermore their is no evidence of such a connection in the photos. The two connections shown are for the USB lead and for the power supply lead. The power supply comes as a seperate "device" that is about 1 inch x 1 inch x 3 inches, or thereabouts. Mains power is supplied to the supply via a conventional three pin plug (supplied) and exits through a lead at a lower voltage. This is plugged into the second of the connections that you can see in the photo; this is the round one. The other connection is for the USB plug. The drive works via USB2 and, so long as your computer supports USB2, it doesent matter what make or model it is, PC, MAC or whatever. Hope this helps.

- does this have a USB 2.0 interface ?

- does it have Firewire also ? I see two data-like sockets on the back.

- where is the compatible power supply required to actually use this product ?

- is it PC and Mac compatible ?
