Good disc, good value
operating system:
Not ApplicableGot two to make a raid 1 array for my server, nice quiet disc with ample capacity, not the largest but 596Gb when formatted more than adequate & around 10p/Gb seems very good value to me.
Performance also very acceptable for my requirements
May be worth noting it requires a sata power connector as there is no 4 pin molex type power connection as found on some WD disks.
Great hard drive
The 6400AAKS has good performance with average reads of ~90MB/s, is innaudible with aam turned on and runs cool, ~35C.Highly recommended and great price.
High density platters
operating system:
Windows VistaThese are very fast drives I have bought 2 to make an intel matrix raid setup. Short stroked them for a 80gb raid 0 and the rest another raid 0 volume.
Again these are very fast, I downloaded the hitatchi f-tune dos hardrive tuner to set the aam to 254 instead of the default slow-n-quite standard setting.
These drives new high density platter versions with the two 320gb platters.
My 80gb raid 0 volume on 2 of these drives has a Random access of 7.6ms, an average read of 223.8MB/s and a burst speed of 3159MB/s.
The remaining space on the drives is a raid 0 1.1TB array which has a respectable 13.2ms response time (random access time), 179.2MB/s average read and a 3145.5MB/s burst speed.
These scores are form a HD tach long test.
I used 128kb stripe btw.
Truely great drives.
Some Tech Details
operating system:
Windows XPThis drive is now also known as Western digital Caviar blue, this is printed on the top of my model as well.
Manufactured Oct 08..
640.1 GB formats to 596gigabytes
Full Format(ntfs)time 1Hr 54Mins
After 2hrs temp was 37C(98F) using Hwmonitor 1.08
Acoustics very quiet.
Using HDtach 3.0.4.0 long bench burst speed 234.1Mb/sec avg 96.8Mb/sec
HDtach quick bench, burst 234.7MB/sec, avg 96.8MB/sec
HD_speed test avg read 109.5MB/sec.
HD_speed burst read 217MB/sec.
WinAAM says aam is inactive so I asssume the HD is set to its loud fast setting, which is very quiet :).
Very well packaged, hd in anti static bag, inside jiffy in box packed out with spacer bags. I did order blank media at the same time but even so well packaged.. Finally even though I went for the cheapskate 5day supersaver free delivery. My order turned up after just 2 days.. I am happy.......
Lets hope WD data lifeguard (free) tools does a working HD to HD copy so I don't need a win reinstall, to put the OS on this new drive.
Quality
operating system:
Windows VistaThis drive is big, fast, solid, quiet and cool. What more could you want?
A Good drive buy it.
operating system:
Windows XPA good drive, fast cool and quiet. Used it for a while now and it's good.
I originally used a bit of software to give it a full whole hard drive partition. Yes it worked ok, but as I was chasing down a low performance problem somewhere on my pc, I found this drive to work slightly faster using the standard Windows 137gb partition size, and then making a second much larger partition in windows.
I bought this as a replacement for another smaller (250gb) Western digital drive that got very hot (needed a big fan over it). It turns out that after a pc upgrade I forgot to take off the jumper that I put on to make it run in sata1 mode, now jumper removed it's running at a normal temp.
Both drives work well at good temps.
I just say this as if you intend to run a drive in sata1 mode, and it gets hot, try running it in sata2 mode even if your motherboard may not support it, you may save some heat.
Western Digital WD6400AAKS
