A high quality machine not dragged down by Windows
os:
Windows VistaI was looking for a good quality machine for one of my customers. He did not want Vista and I did not want to pay for that crap. At first glance this machine looks low spec but its trivial to increase HDD space and the 2.2GHz Duron is not exactly a slouch when you free if from the backbreaking work of running Vista.
The computer exudes quality, and comes complete with a Siemens branded Fedora Linux DVD. Here is a little mistake that mars an otherwise brilliant product. The DVD is 2005 vintage Fedora Core. It does not know how to deal with the machines DVD drive (presumably a SATA one). The machine runs like a dream with the latest FC9 but it is a shame that a novice buying this machine will not be able to get up and running with Linux just with what comes in the box, as you can with the excellent Asus EEEPC.
I hope this is something that can be communicated back to the manufacturers as a matter of urgency. I think there is definitely a place for Linux to act as an add-on to small companies and individuals - and at this price for entry level into some very well made (in Germany) kit its a no brainer!
solid workhorse
os:
LinuxI bought one of these as a second pc. Having had previous experience with fujitsu pc's (i own a scaleo 'p' media centre) i knew it would be half decent..
As previously posted, the copy of fedora wont install on this system as it cant handle sata drives.
I installed ubuntu linux after adding another 1 gig stick of ram the system really flies!
The onboard nvidia 6100 graphics handle the latest linux 'eye candy' vista style visual enhancements really well.
The system does come with a driver disk for windows 2000 & xp, which includes a copy of nero 7 and a trial of norton antivirus (which i'd avoid)
Internally the setup uses quality components, with a seagate 7200rpm sata hard drive & a NEC optiarc multi dvd writer.
Also, the psu is rated at 300 watts max, which would be ample for this setup.
There are 3 sata headers on the motherboard, one floppy connector, and a spare usb connector on the motherboard.
The cpu cooler is a clever piece of design, its huge and would probably cool just about any amd chip you care to use. from what i can find out, the system will run up to a AMD 64 x2 5000 athlon dual core.. tho i do plan to try this in the future, i cant verify this.
The system is also very quiet, you can hear the dvd drive more than the front mounted 120mm fan that cools the cpu via a shroud type arrangement.
all in all, a quality bit of german built pc - if your after a second workhorse pc, buy one of these..
usual speedy & eficient ebuyer sevice.
city link down here in bridgwater, somerset are spot on by the way 5 stars all round
Bit more info on the Esprimo
I have got around to opening it up - trivial in fact and can confirm that the internal build quality is also very high. Huge heatsink on the CPU makes this a fairly quiet system. There are a couple of PCI expansion slots free and the 1GB of memory is only occupying one of the two slots. So a fairly low cost upgrade would be to double the memory. I can also confirm that the reason the supplied Fedora Core linux does not install is that the DVD drive is SATA. SATA DVDs were not around when that 2005 Linux version was made so it is hardly surprising. It also says that this system is all current technology - it isn't some 3 year old warehouse stock!
If you do want to use the supplied linux then you will have to install it over the network from another system. It would be a lot easier to just get the latest version instead, it is a free download afterall.
It seems really quick under Fedora Core 9. Get one of these quick or they will all be gone.
Athlon x2 5000+
Just a follow up to my previous 'review' of the esprimo...
Received my Athlon x2 5000+ cpu today (another speedy & hassle free purchase from ebuyer) And fitted it.
System booted fine and recognized the cpu straight away.
With the 2 sata hard drives & now upgraded cpu, i think the psu would be the next upgrade.
Its rated at 210w continuous -> 300w maximum
The system was no slouch with the 3800+ sempron, but with the athlon x2, its pretty rapid now.
upgrades
Just an update on my previous uh...update :o)
I can confirm that with 2 sata hard drives & the cpu upgraded to a Athlon 64 x2 5000+ That the psu isn't really man enough.
I had several episodes of windows crashing/freezing etc.
Installed a 460w real power psu from coolermaster & everythings fine now...
utilizing both cores @ 100% the core temps haven't reached 35 degrees yet - just goes to show how good the standard heatsink arrangement is...
A 5* machine in my book.
Adding a second SATA drive
I have addded a second SATA drive to mine.
There is a single spare sata connector on the mobo. Something towatch though is the ONLY spare power connector is a conventional type so you will need a converter to sata power. I had one lying around but it may catch you out.
The case has two possible places to put the HD. Under the DVD if you have a caddy or in the place for the floppy drive.
