Great piece of kit runs Ubuntu

I had a 701 and replaced it with a black 901 XP. The build quality of the 901 is much better than the 701 and installing Kubuntu was very straight forward (Use NDISWRAPPER and download/build the Linux Ethernet driver). The battery life is amazing! You can easily use this laptop all day without needing to charge it. It boots XP quickly but I find Kubuntu faster once it has booted up.

First impressions...

Just received my eeepc this morning, it's actually going to be my first laptop never mind a UMPC.

Decided on the XP version for the longer battery life and simple compatibility (fed up of messing with drivers). Colour is nice and bright to look at though I assume it'll show up the grime more easily over the years. Screen is excellent, 16 brightness levels (very very dim through to bright but not too bright).

Keyboard is noticeably small but actually quite nice to use, full set of keys and the function 'Fn' button is actually to the right of the control key so you don't keep accidentally pressing it. Lettering is very clear. The only key that seems strangely out of place is right shift, it's located just to the right of the up arrow. Keys are not 'clicky' and feel very responsive. Plenty of shortcut keys too:

* Turn off LCD backlight

(comes back on with any key)

* Change resolution

(including 1024 * 768 compress)

* Super Hybrid Engine toggle

(Power Saving, High Performance, Super High Performance and Auto - Power Save on Battery and High Performance on AC)

- Can be user defined

* Skype

- Can be user defined

Then:

Suspend, wifi/bluetooth, brightness, external display, task manager, mute and volume.

Build quality is excellent, feels solid to the touch and tap. Hinge is well made, screen does not rotate a full 180 degrees and manual states care to be taken (do not force to 180 degrees flat and do not lift by screen).

Touchpad is nice, supports two-finger vertical scrolling (ala MacBook) but horizontal doesn't seem to work. Mouse buttons are quite loud to click but feel solid, look aluminium maybe.

Power adapter is in-line with figure-8 connector (good for replacement). Although I was hoping for a one-piece built-in-to-plug transformer (like a mobile phone charger) which I believe the eeepc 700 had.

Boot-up speed is ok (26sec from button press to desktop, full shutdown is 19sec) and the stand-by mode (upon closing lid) is like instant-on instant-off (fan does turn off during stand-by).

Weight is very good, although it was a bit heavier than I was expecting for the size.

The only other things I can think to mention is that it does have four rubber feet and the battery locks nicely into place (does not wobble).

Overall I'm very pleased and I look forward to using this eeepc for remote web development.

Recommended.

These are awesome. Great battery life and excellent performance for such a small machine. Also they look cool and people will think you are cool if you have one.

Good advice but be careful...
review by: Anonymous os: Not Applicable

the above advice about buying the Linux version to get the extra storage is great but be aware that many places only have the Linux version with the slower Intel Mobile (Celeron) processor. The ATOM is the same price but faster.

Regarding Branding
review by: Anonymous os: Not Applicable

Anonymous - there is no Asus branding at all, just a small Eee branding below the screen.

To the person asking about Power Point and a word processor. It comes with Microsoft Power Point viewer and a word processor/powerpoint type program both compatable with Microsoft file formats. Also has Microsoft works.

Linux Version
review by: Anonymous os: Not Applicable

Please be aware, there is a Windows and a Linux version of the EEE 901. They both cost the same but because Windows costs money the price is offset by having a smaller Hard Drive! (The Linux one has a 20GB SSD while the XP one has only 12GB)

For anyone who wants XP and has a spare XP code lying about I would reccomend buying the Linux version and then installing XP onto it. Otherwise you are losing out on about 40% of storage space!

Please advise me
review by: Anonymous os: Windows XP

Hi please can someone who has this notebook answer a couple of questions for me?

Does it come with a powerpoint viewer and a word processor? I only need a notebook for this reason, so i can view powerpoints from memory stick and write essays. I dont think i will be able to download the office package because of the small memory, so i need to make sure it will have a powerpoint viewer and word processor? When i ask in PC World ect, they look at me like an alien, and try to make me buy a normal laptop, but i already have one, i only need this for on the train.

Also does anyone know how long the battery lasts when the screen is on its brightest?

Thanks so much!!!!
