Western Digital External Hard Drives

A well made external hard drive. Whisper quiet in operation.
The unit will auto power off when the PC is shut down, so don't worry about the fact that no power switch is provided on the unit. It runs cool as well.
The unit has silicon end boots which make it non slip and non scratch. These can be removed if you wish. The only small niggle is that the status LED (blue) is located at the back edge of the case and is covered by the silicon boot, but it does shine through.
Have used this hard drive on XP / Vista and Linux (OpenSUSE).

Windows XPI have two of these external drives and they are great value, to make them as compatible as possible though they are pre-formatted in the fat32 file system. If you're considering purchasing with the intent of using with windows and for storing any files over 2 gig then make sure you re-format this drive to the NTFS file system before using, obviously if using mac then leave the file system as fat32. Currently the best drive of any type over 500 gig i can find for the money.

Windows VistaJust receieved this Saturday morning..very easy to use pre formatted..I always format my new drives just in case..20 seconds..done.am using it now films and music are transfered at virtually the same rate as my internal hard drives..

Perfect for XBox 360
I have two of the 500gb variants of this drive and, as they are formatted FAT32, they work instantly with the XBox 360 which will not currently read drives formatted NTFS. Several of my friends also use these drives attached to the XBox for viewing avi & divx video. As mentioned in other reviews, the drives are quiet and unobtrusive.

I've been running this now for just over 2 weeks.
ebuyer did their usual brilliant delivery service which was free of charge and arrived after 2 days!!
I unpacked the hard drive plugged it in via a usb port with the supplied cable and away it went. I didnt format it or change the file system and it has worked fine for my needs which is basically photo and PDF file storage.
For the price it is quite simply fantastic. It is noiseless in operation and you dont even know it is there. It turns on and off with my main PC which is now running so much faster because it was full before i had all this extra storage space!!
I recommend this hard drive 100%

Windows XPi plan on buying 2 of these drives within a few weeks,
I already have 8 of the 500mb versions , and i love the way they stack up on my book shelf.
they are good solid drives , very reliable , the clear rubber sleaves on each end means they dont scratch your furniture too.
the drives inside evolve pretty much as technology does.
4 of my drives have an 8mb cache and the other 4 have 16mb caches. i would think this would have a 16 or 32mb cache on it , spin speed of 7200 is standard . all the time e-buyer stocks these drives in the same cases , ill continue to buy more
How big is the cache? What is the rpm?
I have been looking and buying external drives and wondered what rpm and cache of this drive is.

Does this drive use power from the USB lead or has it got a power pack? Product details are pretty non existent.
