ReadyNAS Duo Experience
operating system:
Windows VistaThe ReadyNAS I bought from Ebuyer worked straight out of the box, it was easy to set up and Ive shared it out to 6 PC's running XP and Vista. When it arrived the Backup software was missing, I exchanged several emails with Ebuyer, but they were absolutely useless and really never wanted to know or provide any after sales support. Eventually I managed to get the software through the ReadyNAS forum. The unit is very good, and I've now populated it with 2 * 750GB disks, they appear to run happily at about 54 degrees. I'd recommend this device, but would buy it from another supplier if you want support.
ReadyNas Duo RND2000-100UKS + Free Drive
operating system:
Windows XPInstalled a Seagate 500Gb Drive from e-buyer with the bare unit, then also received a free 500Gb drive as per promotion.
Check the ReadyNAS website for drive compatability before purchase to ensure a trouble free experience.
Contrary to some other reviewsd on here my experience has been nothing but positive - excellent service from both e-buyer and bluemoon (the promotion fullfilment agency) - even delivering to Jersey.
Worked first time out of the box, although you do need to know a little bit about networking to set it up if you have non-standard LAN IP address configurations (which I do).
Have got it working successfully with a KISS 1600 player (on special at the time I bought the NAS) and seem to be running without problem - drives average 37 celsius when idle, rising slightly when intensive disk ops (such a building the RAID array when the second drive was installed).
Just to advise - if you buy a bare unit and install drives yourself, leave time for the disk to be formatted and built before trying to set it all up.
ReadyNAS forums well worth a visit as loads of useful info on there.
So far it does everything I want it to - excellent price, especially with the free drive offer until the end of June 09.
ReadyNAS Duo - Great Little RAID 1 NAS
operating system:
Windows XPAfter losing all the data on my backup external hard drive I realised I needed a more secure backup system. After reading about the ReadyNAS Duo I was amazed to find that it was going for only 159.99 including free 500gb hard drive.
As the system runs in RAID 1 mirror mode it was exactly what I was looking for as if one hard drive dies you just pull it and replace it with a new drive and then the other hard drive copies the files to the new drive.
After fitting the first drive I originally thought the thing was dead (RAIDar said it was a bad disk) but it was formatting the hard drive. Once that was done though it didn't take long to get it all setup and running smoothly.
As I wanted to put my TV Show avi's on the hard drive and the play them via XBMC (Xbox Media Center) I couldn't get the XBMC to see the NAS but I found if I typed in the NAS id name that it let me access it perfectly. Just a little niggle but easy enough to fix.
This was my first NAS and I'm really happy with this little black box. If you do get one, don't panic (like I did) when the thing first boots up. That's the fan at maximum speed while booting. After a few minutes it slows down a lot and goes pretty quiet. I can even watch a movie with the thing in the same room and it not bother me.
Very impressed with features
operating system:
Windows XPI bought one of these units to replace an old unbranded NAS box and must say am very impressed with what Netgear have packed into this box.
It works great as a home or small office NAS with a very good backup interface, both for backing up PCs to the NAS and backing up the NAS to something else. It has other nice features like auto-power controls so it turns itself off overnight then back on again in the morning (based on your schedule) and a very handy BitTorrent client that works very smoothly with almost no setup required.
I have fitted mine with 2 1.5TB WD Cavier Green drives (32MB cache) and it runs pretty much silent - just a very gentle hum.
It runs at a reasonable speed over the GigE interface, doing about 250Mbps read and 200Mbps write on biggish files.
Overall, very pleased. Its nice when a product does the basics well and then has lots of extra features that you can actually make good use of.
Well done Netgear.

ReadyNAS Duo Great little device
operating system:
Windows VistaSuperb experience from eBuyer as usual, upgraded from supersaver delivery.
Took a little while to set up, no problems with firmware and updating it but needed to force factory reset in order to format the Hard-Drive I'd lifted out of another enclosure to use in it http://www.readynas.com/forum/ more helpful than crappy user manual, but only just.
(time spent was finding a step-by-step factory reset guide since enclosed manuals only hinted that drives would be formatted automatically on insertion http://www.hantechnology.com.sg/download/readynas/nv+gsg_eng.pdf page 7 of this PDF helped by saying that you need to start Raidar after reset to be able to create a new volume)
However once connected and HDD formatted works a treat, pretty looking and very quiet device, sat by my printer in study but would certainly be happy to have it sat by my TV if needs be. Highly recommended.
ReadyNas Duo - Great
operating system:
Windows 7Looking at some of the reviews I was a little concerned about my Nas working straight out of the box.
My concerns were nothing to worry about.
I purchased 2 x 1.5TB seagate HD's as specified by Netgear. Installed the first and followed the instructions as per the start up leaflet and within 15 mins, unit was up and running. Auto detected once RIADar was installed. Even told me that I had a firmware upgrade that needed to be installed. Did that no issue. Then installed the second HD and hot plugged. Again no issue, drive detected OK and the unit formatted and then immediately started to sync the second drive.
Now moved 50 GB of data and still no issues found.
So from my point of view the ReadyNas Duo is great. Looking forward to trying out the many features that make the unit what it is.

Netgear RND2000 ReadyNAS Duo 2-Bay NAS Enclosure
operating system:
Windows XPAbsolutely the dog's b******cks, got a free seagate barracuda!
Buy one!
Good for PS3
operating system:
Windows XPI bought this to replace my aging SC101, which isn't supported in Windows 7. As a Playstation 3 owner I also wanted to replace the PS3 Media Server software which I run from my desktop PC. I was concerned worried that file format support would be limited (based on previous experience).
MP3s played fine, as expected. Some older DivX 3 movies didn't play at all, but all files convered using DivX Converter 6 played just fine including the High Definition profile. I was unable to find a DivX 4 or XVid movie to test.
VOB files played pretty well (ripped with CloneDVD and joined with VOBmerge). The image quality was noticably better than those streamed using PS3 Media Server, which often gives me a slightly blurry image, presumably due to transcoding.
There were some issues though. Several VOB files refused to fast-forward any faster than 1.5x which is a pain when scanning through a concert video. Sometimes when exiting from 10x + fast forward the playback froze, but this was fixed by exiting from playback and re-starting the video. A couple of movies showed a blank grey screen where the foreign language sections had been removed. Star Wars Episodes 1, 4, 5 and 6 exhibited this problem during the opening credits, but not Episodes 2 or 3. The VOB files played back fine on my PC using VLC. I tried re-ripping the movie using DVD Shrink, with similar results.
So for the PS3 owner dealing in DivX and VOBs this device is pretty good despite the issues.
