Not for games but good for Media center
review by: steven williams rating:
customer rating
operating system: Windows Vista

I have 2 of these in different machines.

They are very quiet.

The card is not for games and only gets a score of 3.6 in vista for graphics. This did supprise me as my Geforce 8600 GT had a score of 4.9.

However this is not what I bought the card for. I wanted to upgrade my media center to HDMI.

The card is perfect for a media center. After ignoring the driver disk that comes with it and using the latest Catalyst drivers 8.12 I have a perfectly usable High definition media center.

My media center consists of a Athlon 64 X2 3800 processor,

2GB RAM,

4x 1TB Samsung Hard disks,

LG BR and HD DVD Drive

Hauppage Nova-t 500 dual freeview card.

This graphics card.

I have a 1080p Panasonic Plasma screen running via HDMI at 1080P 24 (1920x1080),

I use Power DVD ultra 8 to play high definition content with only 5-10% CPU. The AVIVA processor just takes all the overhead of processing V1 and H264 content onto the card and away from the CPU.

You will have to hack the media center to use the alternative codecs as the microsoft ones do not support hardware acceleration but you have to do this anytime you want to use any hardware acceleration so no difference there.

I have flicker and stutter free Blue Ray playback and that is exactly what I wanted.

The unit is fine for upscaling standard DVD's to 1080p but does suffer a little when upscaling TV Content from the Hauppage card. For some reason I cannot get the signal tode-interlace but it's not that notisabe.

All in all a great card for the money and perfect for a media center.

This card allows you to play high def content even where your processor and memory would not previously allow it..

Media PC's
review by: Andy operating system: Windows Vista

I ordered this card and found it came with a half height rear plate that you can swap over to allow you to fit this in a media PC. You have HDMI and DVI on the half hight bracket, but lose the VGA (D-Sub). It can be disconnected from the card to save it dangling inside the case.

I got the same score for the card as the previous reviewer in Windows 7 beta. Does what it says on the tin really.

I may look at buying a different case now as the one I bought is a fair bit bigger than I imagined it would be. Maybe the Antec Minuet 350 qfc:141001 or Media Center case qfc:150277.

Audio Output
review by: Anonymous operating system: Windows XP

Does this card have the ability to send audio through the HDMI port?

If so does the card have it's own audio processor or does the audio have to be fed in through an on-board SPDIF connector?
