Overview

Product Description

Samsung's F2 Series EcoGreen Drive is the ideal high capacity drive for green computing environments. The new eco-friendly hard drive, F2EG is designed to meet demand for high performance devices with lower power consumption. Samsungs EcoGreen F2 makes it possible to design storage systems with the right balance of high capacity, fast performance and energy conservation. Samsung F2EG has the worlds best areal density at 5400RPM rotation speeds. High density means more bits pass under the head faster, and it improves the drive performance. Samsung employs an advanced data recording technology, which brings the next generation technology into todays single disk platform, enabling Samsungs new 5400RPM drives to perform at current 7200RPM drive speeds. The internal SysMark test results confirms that F2EG performs as same as 7200RPM drive speeds, and even 10% faster than other green drives.

Superb disc for Media Storage
review by: Max rating:
customer rating
operating system: Linux

I have bought 5 of these and installed them into a unRAID media tower for storing and streaming HD media content around the house.

They were upgrading 5 x 500G WD 7200rpm drives and boy they make a difference in every aspect.

1. They are faster to read and compute parity than the 500G ones even if they are only 5400rpm. The average gain is about 10MB/s but probably due to higher data density. Still unexpected from a 5400rpm drive.

2. Much quieter. The old drives were making a buzzing noise when all disks were spun up and system was computing / checkng the parity but now all that is gone. These drives are probably the most silent I ever heard in my career as an IT Technician (after my SSDs of course :P)

3. Temperatures are incredible low. When compacting several hard drives in a high density server, cooling becomes a bit of an issue but not with these ones. The WD were operating at 35 C in my well ventilated case in the loft and even peaking 40 during hot days. The F2's did not register more than 28C so far, with an average operating temperature of about 19-20C.

Did not have them long enough to judge the reliability but if HDDs were a reliable storage solution, I wouldn't have needed unRAID for parity. Always consider some sort of redundancy / backup when dealing with large storage solutions.

I will consider these on my future upgrades, unless they get a 2TB version of it :)

Works in Thomson Sky HD Box

If you are thinking about upgrading your Sky Box to 1TB then this is a good, cost effective option. I can't comment on any manufacturer other than Thomson mind.

On delivery the drive did not have any acoustic management enabled. I used Ftool to enable it, I would recommend that it is enabled as the drive access was clearly audible without it.

Nice Drive

This an extremely quiet drive and it has made my SkyHD box very silent, even during playback, rewinding and fast forwarding at the highest speed available even for HD content.

Ebuyer also outperformed themselves as usual by upgrading the delivery to next day. Thanks

Great Media Drive
review by: Aergan rating:

Great for Media servers, NAS or external enclosures.

Performance is surprisingly good due to 32MB cache & SATAII interface despite being 5400RPM.

This has just replaced 4x 250GB Seagate 7200RPM / SATA / 8MB Cache drives and the temperature drop in my Windows 7 Build 7229 media server is outstanding, just what you need in this British heatwave.

Would suggest 2x or more in RAID Stripe for the most cost effective media server HDD array.

Bought and fitted one of these to my new WHS build.

Runs silently and so far stays very cool.

Great transfer rates, with WHS Power Pack 2 it streams Video_TS, MP4 and MP3 with ease.

Good for what it does
review by: Anonymous rating:

operating system: Windows XP

Very quiet and good read/write speeds.

Only falls down when accessing very large numbers of files (500,000 files even though files themselves are small) - Get a 7200/10000 drive if this is really important to you. (if you have a directory with 500,000 files, I'd reccommend zip/tar/rar before you copy to this drive as it is pretty fast on large files.)

Great for storing lots of large media files and archiving. Which is why I bought it, I partitioned it to get better performance by sticking an 800GB partition of 'rarely used stuff' at the end.

My main PC uses a solid state drive and I only use 12GB on a day to day basis, so think about whether you really need 1TB of fast access at 7200rpm when this will do most people as a storage drive.

My gut reaction is this will be fast enough for your main OS, although not the fastest you can get.

Impressive.
review by: PhilAttric rating:

Bought a 1TB Hitachi Deskstar about April 09 and decided that the price and time were right for another one, however saw this Sammy and decided that the price meant it was a no brainer, easy to install ( quick format it unless you have days to waste waiting for a full format ) and ultra quiet, virtually no heat either, this is a spot on little drive with around 961Gb of accessible space, read and write times are impressive ( 95gb moved in 25 minutes ). Drive came well packaged and the next working day ( selected Super Saver delivery ) so well impressed with Ebuyer, again!

This is a lot of drive for not a lot of cash and im certainly going to be having another, forget your SSD's for the time being, this is the choice of the sensible!

Virgin Media V+ HDD upgrade
review by: Anonymous rating:
customer rating
operating system: Other

I bought this drive to test out on the V+ as there was no documented cases of anyone upgrading the V+ with a SATA drive. I'm pleased to announce that it was a complete success, just a straight swap and I now have 500+ hours worth of space for SD and 100+ for HD. The drive itself is brillaint and really silent like how I wanted it. So if anyone wants to do it themselves you'll also need a SATA to PATA converter http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=250464622669&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT , and these leads http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=350222217569&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/4-Pin-Molex-PC-Internal-Y-Splitter-Cable-1x5-25-1x3-5_W0QQitemZ380136379181QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Computing_CablesConnectors_RL?hash=item5881e4d32d&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14

Now I've tried loads of different methods and wiring but this one is the only one that works, just make sure you don't use any IDE extension cable as it stops the converter from working for some reason. The convertor needs to be plugged in directly into the IDE socket on the V+ motherboard. Fit the splitter onto the power supply you remove from the PATA drive, the 3.5 connector fits into the converter as it needs power to function. The other end sticks in to the other new cable to power the HDD. Finally connect the SATA plug to the converter. V+ will format the drive on inspection of the new drive and the V+ will indicate 80 hrs of recording space, ignore this as the V+ software is only capable of displaying 80 hrs on the screen but in fact records more.
