Sony / Optiarc AD-7241S made region free

Windows VistaThis OEM drive comes without any screws, cables, or software, so make sure you have those from other sources.
I haven't done extensive testing on it yet but so far it seems to be working good. It also has good reviews and is supposed to write more reliably than the Liteon 24x DVD drive, though the Liteon reads faster or something.

I managed to flash the firmware to make it region free thus:
Downloaded the 1.02 autoreset firmware from the "auto" column in:
http://liggydee.cdfreaks.com/page/en/Optiarc-AD-7240S/
Used binflash to flash the drive with the new firmware:

Note: first save (dump) the current firmware to your hard disk in case you need to restore it later. The drive i got had 1.01 version firmware on it.

Autoreset firmware resets the drive region change counter every time you put in a new DVD. It is btter than rpc1 because rpc1 firmware will require you to use extra software to overcoe software regon counters. See:

Bitsetting firmware lets you set DVD+ discs to be DVD- so older DVD players that can only read DVD- discs can read them.
Decent drive

Windows 7Well, fantastic drive. Does exactly what it should and quiet running.
Recommended, especially with a region free firmware.
Note : I could not get the autoreset firmware to work with region 1 discs, so used the RPC1 version instead.

Windows 7I bought this to replace a basic sony dvd drive and i couldnt beleive how quiet and fast this drive is.
I would certainly recommend this drive
Please dont forget OEM so you dont get any cables with the drive but an excellent drive never the less
