for those not fortunate enough to own an external optical drive
Bought this to replace my old workhorse, it was bought with the intention to be left on continuously, performing tasks such as a light media center (connected to a 42" LCD HD TV and 7.1 surround system), overnight downloads, IM and Skype and of course, alarm clock.
This machine is great value for money, its early days yet but this machine is greatly exceeding my expectations.
For anyone apprehensive about buying this due to it's OS, no worries, you can indeed put anything you like on this machine, its hardware is pretty well supported by all the major OS's, though i must say Ubuntu linux is by far the best OS for the job in my opinion
if anyone is wondering how they can get an OS onto this thing without using an external CD/DVD drive, you can use a USB Memory stick, to get ubuntu onto this thing i used a program called "unetbootin", available for windows as well as linux, if you have an ISO of your chosen linux OS this makes installation a breeze, just remember to go into your BIOS (hold delete at boot-up) and disable revoboot, and switch USB device mode to behave as a hard disk instead of a floppy if its under 2GB (which mine was) then boot it up again and keep tapping F11 or F12, i forget which, but this will bring up the select boot device menu, choose USB and away you go.
getting windows xp onto a memory stick requires a PE Builder, if this doesnt play nice download yourself the HP bootable USB utlity, make your stick bootable, then dump the contents of your CD onto the stick and again, away you go, as i said before drivers are well supported on all major OS's so dont sweat messing around a little until you find what works for you.
hope this helps!
Acer Revo
operating system:
LinuxBought this to hook up to my plasma TV via HDMI.
Installed Ubuntu 9.04 using an external cdrom and (seperately) the NVIDEA linux drivers. Some issues with the sound not working on HDMI initially but fixed after some tweaking.
Overall very pleased with purchase
Good with Ubuntu 904 and 910
Fast and responsive under load in a way that just does not happen with Vista and 1gb of shared RAM.
904 has a glitch in the wired network driver configuration that needs a power-off and restart after installation for it to come up cleanly. Hot Rebooting is not enough.
The 904 repository also lacks the optimum nVidia drivers for the (very new) ION graphics, but these are in the 910 release, which still at Release Candidate status today. Should go full release this week, and I would recommend it then.
You will need to temporarily turn off 'RevoBoot' in the BIOS in order to load OS from CD or USB stick, and rearrange th boot order as is usual.
Turning it back on again we found that all the RevoBoot instant-on features worked fine (and fast, oh, so fast!) as well as Ubuntu booting when you hit the OS button.
Ubuntu/Xubuntu 910 +++
The full releases of 910 have solved all problems. The latest nVidia drivers work well, install with a couple of clicks on the applet that pops up.
Fast, clean, and translucent spinny cube desktops all on a tiny Atom with 1GB RAM!
Recommended.
Great Home Server
operating system:
OtherThis is a great machine.
I have this running FreeBSD with a ZFS mirror on two external drives.
It is small, quiet and doesn't use huge amounts of electricity.
Highly recommended.
Answers to some questions
* Does it have a mounting bracket for the back of a monitor/tv?
Yes.
* Does it have bluetooth?
No. I added a USB dongle for a couple of quid.
* What tye of RAM doe it use and is it extendable?
SODIMM (laptop style), yes.
* how quiet is it?
Very. There is a fan on the GPU, which can spin up under heavy load, but it's not really loud.
I use one of these as a media box running Boxee on Ubuntu Linux 9.10. It works brilliantly. I can playback 720p video with no problem over HDMI.
Over six months in operation to date
operating system:
LinuxI bought one of these to run a web server on Ubuntu linux over six months ago, it has been running constantly since then with only a couple of re-boots to enable software updates. It also performs as a media server, Samba server and FTP server among other duties.
This little box is excellent value for money, it runs on very little electricity so it can be left constantly on. All in all I'm well impressed, so much so I'm considering installing these in our office to replace our desk tops over the next few years.
Great MythTV frontend!
operating system:
LinuxI'm using this as a MythTV frontend using Mythbuntu Karmic 9.10
Mythbuntu installed cleanly with no problems, other than a minor audio issue because the sound chip was being detected incorrectly. A small entry in modprobe.conf sorted that out.
This machine handles 1080p beautifully, and looks every bit as good as my triple-core Phenom with NVidia 8400.
It's a tiny machine and comes with a neat little keyboard and mouse that looks very mac-ish. It runs whisper quiet.
The internal wifi works without needing to compile ubuntu modules, but is not fast enough for HD so I'm using the ethernet port instead.
A great machine at a great price, ebuyer how do you do it?
Acer Aspire Revo Review
operating system:
LinuxGOOD POINTS
The price tag
The size makes this very portable
Great as a media PC or home server
Its very quiet
Uses hardly any electricity
Plenty of USB ports
High Definition HDMI
SD Card Reader
eSATA port
WiFi
NEUTRAL POINTS
-No bluetooth but these are ~£2 on ebay
-No Operating System but you can install Ubuntu Linux for FREE
-No CD/DVD drive means you will be installing everything from USB stick or External drives
BAD POINTS
-You cant just take it out of the box and it will go like an Apple iMac
- My experience Installing Ubuntu from USB stick required a lot of Googling
Finally figured out you had to press Delete at start-up, fiddle around with a few options in the BIOS to boot from USB and then I had to restart the computer and mash the F12 button before I could install the Ubuntu operating system.
CONCLUSION
5/5 for the Techno Savvy
3.5/5 for the Computer Illiterate
Amazing Media Center
operating system:
Windows XPInstalled WinXP via USB stick (search google on how to do this). Added CoreAVC and MediaPortal - Wow! So silent, and plays 1080p mkv (enable CUDA in CoreAVC). I need one of these in every room. Combine this with the Kworld 399u USB Dual Tuner - or better still, install the tuner on a server and buy a ruck of these!
Only quibble is lack of optical or SPDIF out - digital audio is only through HDMI or external USB
6 USB ports, 1 eSATA, 1 SD card reader - built in WIFI (g) + Ethernet port
