Buy It!

I have used Samsung internal drives since i got into IT a few years ago and i swear by them.

I wanted a decent external drive for backing files up and for helping with repairs and builds so when i saw this and a really good review online i had to have it.

I wasn't disappointed. Solid build quality and top notch finishing are a great start.

File transfer is way quicker than i thought it would be. A 700mb file transfered in under 30 seconds. Top that off with a drive that you can barely hear in a room, even when its working hard or that hardly gets warm to the touch, even after 3 days being worked hard and i have myself a great new toy.

Samsung have thrown in a power adaptor with a decent length power supply cable and mini usb lead too and all the software you need pre installed on the drive. The user manual is also on the drive. Oh and the variable power led underneath is a cool touch too as it blinks to let you know when its working.

Like i said...Buy It!...you wont be disappointed. :)

Very Impressed

I received the Samsung 1.5Tb Story Station last week and it's very impressive. I work in IT, and believe me, you can ignore the comment above about it being slow. I was able to transfer over 140Gb to it in under 3 hours. I'm using it as a media center storage area and have been able to stream 2 HD Movies from the drive simultaneously.

Inside it's using the Samsung 1.5 EcoGreen drive which is very good for energy saving and extremely quiet.

As of the 15th September 2009, this is the best price/value for a 1.5Tb external drive.

Effective and Stylish External Drive

Just unpacked this, it comes with a 0.5m mini USB cable (black), small power block (not the on plug type, has a short plug in mains lead and longer low power lead to unit), quick start guide, and the drive itself.

Drive is very solid, dull gun metal brushed metal finish. Wording on top says Samsung, and red wording on front says 'Story'

The under lighting is white and just below the front edge as shown in the product picture. You can adjust from dull to bright with the volume style knob on the front. You cant turn it off, as this turns off the whole drive. It flashes on and off when drive is being accessed which in a dark room may be annoying but you can at least turn it down.

No issues getting it to fire up in windows. Software on the drive is not needed to use it but includes a backup package, and an encryption package if you want to install them.

Very impressed with the quality of the build and drive. Would recommend to anyone looking for an external unit.

Define Slow?
review by: Anonymous operating system: Windows Vista

I copied 700GB of files to the drive in under 3 hours at a steady 20MBS +. Files mostly 1-2 GB in size from family movies. Certainly seemed fast enough for me.

49GB of family photos took longer than I hoped, but lots of small files going to be more of challenge. Again was stable and I just left it to it.

Working with the drive to move files around, view etc I have noticed no slugish behaviour. Comparison software takes seconds to verify files against my local H/D master copy even across thousands of files.

Yes drive to drive internal is faster than the external to internal, but hey this is a USB 2 interface measured in MB/S, and they not as quick by design as SATA can be (GB/S).

Certainly doesnt appear an issue with this ext drive.

Oh and the off switch is a real boon as I leave it powered off and no computer virus can now jump and damage my backups. Except when I power it up to refresh the backups, nothings perfect but it easier than fighting to back of the PC to disconnect when you not using :)

Cool & quiet

Had one of these a few weeks now which i am using plugged into the USB port on my IoBox HD media player. Drive is very quiet and runs cool, is pretty small & very good value for money for a 1.5TB drive. Unfortunately i had to buy from another online company as ebuyer had sold out of them at the time (which is not surprising at this price!).

Excellent Drive! Silent, cool running and good transfer speed!

What more could you ask?

Stylish solid, ventilated case, sensible power supply not those terrible cheap dual voltage type.

Compaired to my other external drives this shines!

Highly recommended, to top it all, the usual excellent service from Ebuyer and Fast Free Delivery! Thanks Ebuyer!

Companion Software Annoying
review by: PeterL rating:

The other reviews provide a good overview of this product.

My beef is with the installable backup management software supplied on the unit. This software is pitched at complete novices, and makes assumptions about what (and where) you want to back-up - and starts to do so before you've even completed your preferred selection! (Annoying)

In my case on completion of backup 12 files were reported as errors (not backed-up) but the only way to establish which specific files was to trawl through an entire session log (of over 40GB of files; thousands of them!) a real needle-in-haystack exercise. In the cases I managed to spot as the results scrolled by, each error file apparently had a backup file path/name that is too long (not seen this as a limit in windows 95 onwards so I assume that this is a limit imposed by the backup utility).

Nice hardware, shame about the tools!

I needed some disk space...(as everyone does)...

this did the trick...

just something to bak things up to....

its good that the power adaptor thing is not on the plug itself as it sometimes is..because that is annoying..

the power adaptor is on a separate lead....
