A cracking little machine
operating system:
Windows XPI was looking for a netbook to replace an ageing Dell Latitude LS laptop that was breaking apart at the seams.
My uses are surfing the Internet, essay writing, some movies/music, music tracker programs and some old console emulation. Basically all the things a netbook can handle.
This machine has managed to cope with all these in style, with XP running fine on 1GB RAM and the 1.6ghz Atom CPU. There's not much to distinguish netbooks spec-wise other than features, keyboard, battery and so on - read below.
The screen is bright, sharp and clear, the keyboard very useable and easy enough to type on.
The wireless connectivity is spot on, I rarely dip below 4/5 signal bars when out and at home and there's plenty of USB ports for a USB key. The machine is lightweight and easy to travel with.
A few things it lacks over the NC10 - battery size, bluetooth, inferior camera and a glossy shell.
Battery - I have had between 4 and 7 hours use out of my netbook and it takes 1.5 hours from 0% charge to full - a great improvement on other laptops I have had.
Bluetooth - small USB dongles can be had for less than a fiver if you really need it - to be honest, there's not much use for this anyway.
Camera - 0.3 megapixels is certain poor, but it is fine for a bit of skype calling.
Of course, this being a prebuilt machine there is plenty of trial software preloaded and setup/deinstallation of features is simple enough. You can be up and running in about 40 mins after the machine configures itself.
A cracking unit and well worth a purchase for a budget conscious user looking for a netbook.
Fantastic
operating system:
Windows XPExcellent machine.
Not too many additional software programmes. Recovery software by Samsung is great and battery manager is simply outstanding. Battery life is around 6 hours on normal usage.
More than enough for day to day activities.
Screen is crystal clear.
Overall a very good buy, hoping to get the £20 cash back from Samsung so the cost should be around £209. Although I am very happy with this machine, some times I do wonder why did I not go for Windows 7 or Sony which might be better looking....but you have to pay the price! I donot know what I am missing....LOL
WiFi Card on Ubuntu Linux
Hi, for anyone wishing to try out Ubuntu on this hardware, there is a solution to the Realtec WiFi card here.

Enjoy.
OUTSTANDING
operating system:
Windows XPThis netbook is, quite simply, outstanding value for money. If you are expecting a high performance gaming laptop, don't bother, this is not designed for blisteringly high speed performance! However, for the basics of accessing the web, dealing with office applications, this does the job, and does it well. The battery life is excellent. I've had nigh on 6 hours out of each charge.
Incredibly easy to set up. WiFi connected in just a few minutes once powered up and software installed. The backup software seems to be comprehensive and good. Loads of freebie software to try, including a 12 month version of Office 2007. A great deal.
WiFI Card
is a Realtek RTL8192E PCI 802.11n PCI NIC
Works okay with Win7
operating system:
Windows 7Nice little machine - in reply to the above ques: runs Win7 fine, but would recommend upgrading to 2gb ram - eats up about 600mb sitting idle in win7.
Battery life is good, about 5hrs of internet browsing + word processing.
Bit slow at times, but fine for internet, office work, even a bit of programming.
Good value for money overall for a small, portable, inexpensive machine.
Few things to consider before buying
operating system:
Windows XPGood little netbook but there is few things to consider before buying
1) There is only one speaker (On the left)
2) Screen is not as good as the NC10
3) Charger gets really hot
4) Its not as good as the older NC10
Reasonable netbook; little bit of effort linux users
operating system:
LinuxOk got this yesterday, and resisted the temptation to wipe the disk and install Linux...got burnt in the past as new laptops with latest hardware tend to have some compatibility issues. By dual booting, leaves you a fallback to recover from. Fortunately offered to partition the HD and so allowed me leave a small partition for XP, one to recover from, and the rest for Linux.
I would recommend getting rid of crippleware eg McAfee and Office "25 uses and then buy me", installing AVG or Avast.
I put on Mandriva 2010 (because it has the "task Moblin" Atom optimised option) using USB. Loaded and installed in less time than it took to register the pre-installed Windows XP Then disaster! wifi not working. This uses the RTL8192E. The driver is due to be included in the next release of the kernel. Fortunately many people have found solutions. What worked for me was 1) update Mandriva to the latest version completely. 2) (optonal install the PLF media from EasyURPMI) 3) Create a build environment. (install kernel-desktop-devel using Install and Remove Software) 4) Download the 8192E driver and install as described in SammyNetbook forums...
Everything now works...really pleased. and with the 6 cell battery life of 6 hours...not bad at all. One star deducted (unfairly probably) for giving the small amount of grief to find and install WiFi drivers.
windows
Just stick with XP, tried, tested and compatible. Works brilliantly why mess about and end up with driver problems. Just use and enjoy this super little machine.
Whats the Wifi card on this??
Hi, I would like to buy one of these + remove Window replacing it with Ubuntu Linux. I have read a rave review, but they warn some are fitted with the realtek Wi-Fi and some with Atheros cards which are easily Linux compatible. What has this got?? Thanks.
