Excellent Media Centre PC
operating system:
LinuxI bought the Windows 7 version of the 3610 back in December (at 250 pounds) and haven't regretted it at all.
I installed the XBMC Live installation (xbmc.org) and configured the PC to dual boot. As there is already a linux distro supplied with this PC, you can also install it within Ubuntu or any modern distro.
It fits neatly behind my 37 inch Sharp Aquos television and had no problem playing 1080P content with any file format I try (and I have them all believe me). CPU use hovers between 10% and 20% when using the Linux specific VDPAU video acceleration. Its very quiet and you have to get within a metre of it in order to hear it at all.
The keyboard and mouse are decent quality, nothing to write home about.
If you plan to buy this and maybe upgrade to Windows 7 later, I can tell you that the system is very responsive and perfect for webbrowsing. Plays youtube fine and with the upcoming 10.1 update to Flash, you should be good to play 1080P in youtube and other sites in-browser. The Windows 7 & Vista versions of XBMC now feature hardware video acceleration and the CPU idles between 10 and 20% (same as Linux).
The CPU speed is slightly anemic for strenious tasks (such as software encoding of video and multiple flash apps loaded at the same time) and its good to see that the second core is utilised quite a bit in day to day tasks. I do advise installing the 'flashblock' browser plugin for Firefox or Chrome to stop unsolicited animated ads slowing down the browser. You can click to opt-in to the ads or set up white-lists for your favourite sites. This plugin greatly improves the speed of browsing on a nettop-spec cpu.
The layout of the ports on the PC is a little strange. I would have preferred to have more USB ports on the top and it never looks quite 'right' when laid down flat. I never know which way around its supposed to be. But this is a minor issue in an otherwise outstanding package. If you have a HDTV and any kind of home network then this is the HTPC you have been looking for. At 200 quid, you really can't fall off.
@John re: ipayer hd?
The Nvidia ION has H.264 HD content decode functionality in hardware. Most formats of video commonly used can be decoded in hardware with very little CPU usage,
The Windows drivers support it, and the newer proprietary nvidia drivers for Linux support it.
Excellent for a media centre PC
operating system:
LinuxThis is an excellent option for the media centre PC. I installed xbmc + ubuntu, and it plays and handles very smoothly. Very good value for money. Would recommend.
Acer R3610
John, I have the R3610 running Windows 7. It plays BBC Iplayer HD videos fine but make sure you use Flash 10.1 beta 1 NOT beta 2 - they've broken something in that release.
As perhaps a matter of interest to some people, I use this system as a casual gamer and have so far played the folllowing (albeit not new...) games on it at average to high graphics settings without any problems:
Virtua Tennis 2009, Need For Speed (Underground and Most Wanted), Crysis Warhead, NHL 2009, Crazy Taxi 3 and Sonic Heroes
Great Media Centre PC
operating system:
LinuxI'm really pleased with my Revo R3610. It's a little gem that makes a compact and quiet media centre at a bargain price.
It came with Linpus Linux, which seems OK, but I wanted to use something more mainstream, so I've replaced it with Linux Mint 8, which works well. It's fairly easy to install Linux Mint from a USB flash drive. Instructions can be found at pendrivelinux.com.
I've hooked it up to my 32 inch TV via HDMI. Video playback is good for both SD and HD.
For good HD results it's best to use a media player with VDPAU support. This offloads the video decompression onto the Ion graphics hardware. For this to work you need to use the proprietary display drivers from NVIDIA and also use a media player that supports VDPAU. GNOME Mplayer and XBMC both have VDPAU support which can be easily enabled in their standard settings screens. Additionally, an iPlayer plug-in can be added to XBMC which plays HD iPlayer streams without any problem.
One thing to beware is Compiz can interfere with video playback. At first I had a problem with screen tearing. I managed to fix it by setting "Sync to VBlank" in Compiz Settings Manager (General > Display Settings).
Great mini-PC
operating system:
LinuxThe supplied Linux OS works, but the disk is only partly configured so you have a 20GB OS partition and the rest is unformatted. Just in case anyone is wondering where their 230GB went! Supplied drive is Hitachi, at least in the one I received.
Great PC, quiet (can hear the fan, but its not bad most of the time), it has the Atom 330 CPU which is dual core, and dual thread so the OS sees 4 CPU cores. Seems very responsive compared to the 1Ghz Via CPU box its replacing.
Unit draws on average 21w in use, at maximum CPU and disk access that rises to 26w, so its power friendly.
The Nvidia ION GPU is very fast. Supplied linipus OS has nvidia propriety driver so does hardware acceleration. GPU has 4 clock speeds and will auto-slow down the GPU clock when doing les graphics intensive tasks. Supplied linux distribution does not work well with high-res screens however defaulting to 1024x768, had to use the nvidia-settings utility from command prompt to se correct 1920x1200@60Hz for my screen.
This would make an excellent little desktop, or mini house server (my usage), but you really want to throw away the included Linux build and load something better.
Quirk to note is that the optical port comes with a sticker over it, and a optical port plug in a small bag inside the bag. Don't loose it, and don't think your optical port is missing! Same with USB port next to power button, it has a cover over it.
Wireless seems very problematic. Did not work at all out of the box with the installed linipus OS. Loaded Fedora but yet to re-visit the wireless config.
Included mouse and keyboard are cheap and cheerful but functional.
Excellent value for a small server though.
Great media centre!
operating system:
LinuxThis is a great little machine for the money. I have no experience of Linux so was warey it a first - however, I've installed Linux Mint and it was all relatively straight forward. I am using the machine as a media centre (using XBMC), torrent client (Ktorrent) and file server (I've got a 1TB external harddrive attached to it via USB). It is tiny, runs silently, and looks smart. The picture on my HDTV is absolutely brilliant. It connects up to my Home Cinema system via optical S/PDIF and the sound is fantastic.
I have to also add that despite choosing super saver delivery the item arrived within a day.
I couldn't be more pleased! Apple TV eat your heart out!
Great little HTPC
operating system:
OtherI bought this to replace another creaking media player I had. Installed Windows 7 (a breeze as I have an external DVD drive), but XBMC (the principal reason for buying) through Windows was not good quality-wise.
Following this, I installed Ubuntu in a dual boot set up and now run XBMC through that. The difference is amazing. Video quality (720p mkvs on my Optoma HD700x projector on a 106" inch screen) is simply stunning, goodness knows what 1080p must be like. Sound quality via SPDIF to my amp is also superb. The unit is also whisper quiet and the prospect of lower energy costs for torrent downloading etc. are encouraging.
Still feeling my way and lots still to do to perfect my set-up, getting the file sharing on my network sorted, setting up my Harmony remote control etc., Ubuntu is a whole new world to me. It will take time to get everything just so, but I'm hugely impressed so far and looking forward to fine-tuning this little beauty. These machines are a steal! If you're in the market for a HTPC set up don't hesitate.
Great value, neat system
operating system:
LinuxVery impressed for less than £200 delivered. Very neat little system, small footprint, looks nice, lots of ports - 6 USB, monitor, HDMI, LAN, SATA port, memory card slot etc. I was going to build a cheap system but couldn't do it for near this price.
Not heard of Linpus Linux before, seemed to work OK but as another reviewer commented, the wireless LAN wasn't functioning under Linpus.
I installed Mandriva Linux without any drama and although wireless didn't work initially as soon as I'd updated the system it worked fine.
slightly confused
does this computer have a DVD/CD drive
