Overview

Product Description

WD Scorpio Blue SATA drives continue to offer the highest capacity for space-hungry operating systems, like Windows Vista®, with plenty of room left over for photos, music, and video. WD’s ShockGuard™ technology protects the drive mechanics and platter surfaces from shocks. WD’s SecurePark™ parks the recording heads off the disk surface during spin up, spin down, and when the drive is off. This ensures the recording head never touches the disk surface resulting in improved long-term reliability due to less head wear, and improved non-operational shock tolerance.

Same speed as my 320Gbyte

A 9.5mm regular laptop drive able to store 640Gbytes. Excellent capacity, good speed, no noise, no vibration, no heat. 5 star product.

This drive is advance format, if you clone your old hard drive you need to run WD align program. If you clone your old 512K sector drive without aligning it this drive will be very slow at writing data, probably less than 10Mbps, if you follow the instructions provided by Western Digital, you will get normal performance of read 60-80Mpbs and Write 50 - 70Mbps.

This is good as a second Hard Drive in a 2.5 Inch Caddy for Backup or Additional Space.

Ok first things first. This offers a lot of capacity in small form factor so dont knock it, buttt do not even attemtp to buy this hard drive assuming thta it will be a substitute for your laptops current hard drive if you are expecting performance and loads of hard drive space.

This is where this hard drive struggles BADLY !
At 5400 RPM and 8MB Cash it hates Windows 7, and disk defrragmentation can take almost an hour.

My Machine is Quad Core Laptop with 8 GIGS of RAM so trust me when I Say that the Hard Drive is slowwwww.

However if lugging around more space is your thing (this is what I did with mine after it failed as a Laptop Hard Drive), pop this baby in a caddy and load it up with all your stuff for extra MEGA SPACE.

Reliable WD Quality... But slow.

I purchased this latest incarnation of the Western Digital Blue, hoping that it would provide a useful upgrade from my existing 500gb of storage space. Currently running a WD5000BEVT - the well-established 500 gigabyte drive that so many folk seem to install to their PlayStations.

Anyway, despite perfoming a clean install (and therefore checking that their were no 'partition alignment' issues) I have to say that I found this drive to run very slowly indeed. Don't get me wrong - it seems to do OK in the benchmarks (well, in the built-in 'Aero' Windows 7 Performance test, at least) - with a score of 5.8.

But in terms of actual real-life useability, it seems MUCH slower than the WD5000BEVT that it replaced. It took several HOURS to do a clean Win7 install. Maybe it's to do with the Advanced Format structure, or perhaps there's another reason. Whatever that reason may be, I've found myself sticking with the cheaper, faster 500GB drive.

Incidentally, I did check the alignment of this new drive, using the suggested WD utility (see. www.wdc.com/advformat). All partitions showed as properly aligned, and yet the performance was still very poor.

i know all the reviews say this drive is very slow, but when i built my current computer, the first windows install took along time, so it may just need some time
