How things work...
review by: Anonymous os: Not Applicable

Ok for anybody new to pc building and reading the reviews of this product may wonder if their motherboard will see all or half the RAM. There is no great mystery here - first off check your motherboard manual to make sure the desired size will work in it - if not the motherboard will simply see the highest compatible module size. Also make sure that your motherboard isn't particular about ECC RAM (rarely). Finally single sided ram modules will in fact register as only half the size in some older motherboards - in some cases a BIOS upgrade may fix this but if you are not sure just head over to www.crucial.com/uk and use their memory selector tool to see what RAM modules are compatible with your motherboard. If you keep all these things in mind, you can also keep in mind that Kingston is one of the best memory manufacturers in the world, so if their ram doesn't work properly for you - its 10 to 1 your fault. Hope this helps.

I had the same problem, I put it in and I could only see 64MB, and it should be 128MB. I tried it in another machine and it was all there.

Only works with some motherboards!

not only does this module only show up as an "extra" 64mb on my board, rather than 128, (ie giving 320 instead of desired 384) but...

* it shows as NOTHING when left as standalone - BIOS gets as far as memory test and hangs/shuts off.. which makes me wonder about the stability of the system with this DIMM installed! Report from another user that it hung up for the first time in ages with this fitted (removed faulty chip a couple months ago to prevent it), though havent seen it myself
* it seems to prevent other modules from fully registering! bought to replace a suspected overheating/crashing 256 "Extram" alongside a (perfectly functional) 256 Kingston part, the maximum that i can get is 320mb... not 384, not 512, not 576, not 640!

I shall quite likely be RMAing this as soon as i can, if i can't swiftly find a fix. Quite annoying as I bought Kingston because of a bad experience with - and all the negative reviews for - the budget memory, and the one properly working DIMM I had for the machine was a 256mb Kingston of the exact same spec (which is not *quite* enough to make windows properly smooth). Should have just bought a 256mb Ebuyer stick???

Like I say the larger, otherwise very simlar Kingston chips in before worked perfectly, so i dont know if a bios fix would do anything for me! I'll try it if i can find anything but not confiedent!

(yes, ive tried them in every possible combination, orientation and order)

Works fine as long as your motherboard supports it.

I've just received three of these and they work nicely in my old MSI Socket A board, but older machines, including the ones I actually bought them for, only see 64MB, not 128MB.

It seems to be almost impossible to find out before buying whether memory will work in older machines - it's getting to the stage where if I want 256MB for an old machine, I buy a cheap 512 stick and live with it running at half capacity!
