Windows XPThis drive is really amazing !!
- GOOD POINTS: damn fast, really quiet (I don't know why people said in other reviews it was noisy - even but putting my ear on the case I can't even hear it !!!), large hard drive and above all cheap !!
- BAD POINTS: installation was a bit painful if you are novice ... as 80 gig is not detected under DOS using standard FDISK. I'd recommend you either use Partition Magiq or WD utilities (not included with Disk)
PS: Make sure the Disk is well ventilated as it may heat more than other disks
excellent drive!

Windows XPadded drive, found by bios immediately on Gigabyte GA 7N400 Pro, downloaded western digital's datalifeguard tools:http://support.wdc.com/download/index.asp#dlgtools. This formats the drive and creates partitions.
once it's done, you can click on the link to register the drive on line.
absolutely incredible - quiet, quick, cheap and so easy to set up. This is my second Caviar and I'm not disappointed!
Easy as 1-2-3

Windows XPI've had this drive for a few months now, but the review section was not up and running then. I agree with all here. Fast drive, quite, (I also have a 20GB WD that came with my system). The 8Mb cache really makes a difference when manipulating data over and over again. Installation under XP was a doddle (once my old brain had got around to understanding what to do). For the performance this drive is a cheap as chips!
WD SE 80Gb

Windows XPNice and quiet, yet fast. Quite simply the best drive i have had. Remember that the WD SE drives have 3 yr warranties opposed to the standard one year warranties on other manufacturer's drives.
Superb drive, quiet, fast and stable!

Windows XPGot two of these today and setup in a RAID performance array. Replacing my maxtor plus 8's because after one replacement 6 months ago the other one now failed! Gonna sell the replacements on ebay or something!
Anyway back to the Cavier SE! Every review on websites I read shows pretty much glowing reports. While they are not the fastest drives around, WD's are by far the most reliable (read above!) With an 8MB buffer they are pretty much as fast as any other 7200rpm Ide drive out there.
Now is a great time to buy because of falling prices due to to the intro of new serial ATA format that is a gimmic at the moment.
Cavier drives really are the cream of the crop in reliablility and stability but they have always been a bit on the pricey side, but this range on ebuyer seems to be inline with its competetors - seagate, hitachi, and the maxtor plus 9 range.
As for noise, well I think the guy who complained about it must have superhuman hearing cos they are actually quieter than any drive I've had including Maxtor plus 8's which were meant to be very quiet. Noise is not an issue.
Performance wise, the 8mb definitely helps. In a Raid array with 2 drives linked up, the buffer size is increased to 16mb!! 8 times a standard drive! I installed win xp pro in under 10 mins from booting from the CD to staring at the desktop. Good stuff! Other drives might have the edge in speed, but at the moment the Cavier SE range is definitely the best value in my opinion.
At only £55 for a huge 80GB and 8mb buffer, they are a bargain. I'll report back when I've given them a serious testing!
Fantastic drive!

Windows MEHave two of these babies in a striped RAID using an ECS L7VTA motherboard, and boy is it fast,
windows boots up in half the time than my old IBM 180GXP drives, fast for a/v editing, definately reccomended.
Western Digital Cavier SE 80Gb 7200rpm 8mb Cache Hard Drive

Not ApplicableGreat drive. Fast, and quiet. The 8MB cache makes a big difference, well worth the extra few quid. As with most OEM products, there's no bolts, so if your case doesn't have them you will need some M3s. Don't forget, there's no IDE cable.
Western Digital 80Gb with 8Mb Cache

Not ApplicableI have had this drive for several mths now, very fast quiet and it has a Three yrs warranty!!
Used WD utilities to set up the drive as Partition Magic was taking ages so I gave up and downloaded them from the WD site.Use 8Gb main partition 45GB for data and the rest as a hidden backup partition for quick roll back. It is such a good drive I have another in a External USB2 case for full back up.Also I may buy another and try a Raid array.A fast HD system is very important as the HD is the usually the weak link in a fast system.
FAST!

Windows XPI've been using a seagate with 2 megs of cache until now! the speed difference you get with loading times etc is phenominal with the 8 meg cache! reccomend this drive to anyone!

Windows XPI've been running one of these for over a year now with no problems. Worked hard (2d and 3d graphics) for 40-100 hours a week with no failures yet. Very quick accessing both large and small files, and quiet enough that you can't hear it over the whirr of the case fans.
I do reccommend you get some decent IDE cables, like the rounded ones from Ebuyer (~£2), they cut the XP boot up time down to a few seconds.
