great product
operating system:Not ApplicableI bought two of these and set up a VPN between two locations within a couple of hours (and that includes the driving time between locations!). The web-based set-up and configuration facility is comprehensive and intuative. The auto-sensing cross-over function is also very useful - allowing you to use standard or cross-over cables to connect to other devices.
I'm just about to buy two more.....
What a box! :o)
operating system:Windows 2000I have been looking into which firewall to get for a while and found this is the best unit around for price and ease of use. It has all the great features of the more expensive models and is a doddle to set up.
I had the thing on my network within minutes the only thing that took the time was the port redirection (but thats the same for any unit).
I would recommend this to anyone and everyone, and with up to 8 VPN tunnels straight from win2k desktop - you can't go wrong.
In the firewall's http interface, it gives you great explanations of what the settings do, and is great to learn from if you don't already know.
Well done Netgear - 10 out of 10.
uPnP
Just to lets you know that this device has uPnP (automatically opens UDP/TCP ports on demand from PC) without uPnP you can't use VoIP in MSN messenger
SETUP 1of2
You will need a LAN (RJ45) broadband modem or router eg. Netgear DM602 or DG814
STATIC IP SETUP EXAMPLE:
Modem/Router setup
1. Your DG814 LAN IP should be different that your FVS314 LAN IP for eg. 172.12.9.1 and subnet mask 255.255.255.0
2. Use DMZ to forward traffic to 172.12.9.2
3. Your DG814 LAN IP should be different that your FVS314 LAN IP for eg. 172.12.9.1 and subnet mask 255.255.255.0
1. Turn off DHCP
Excellent Product
operating system:Windows XPI bought two of these to connect our two offices. The FVS318 itself was easy to set up, but I did have some problems because these boxes don't connect directly to the internet, they go through ADSL routers. Its important to set up port forwarding (if using NAT on the router) and I found even when I was using the ADSL router as a router (at one end), port forwarding still needed to be set up on that router. I think better instructions are required either on the Netgear website or in the box.
When set up, compared to Microsoft VPN, it works a treat.
DNS issues
Setup a VPN tunnel between 2 sites, but couldn't get DNS to resolve any hostnames on either side.
Tried a whole host of suggested solutions but could not get it working.
Updated firmware on each router and finally got things working - couldn't find any similar cases elsewhere on the web, but must be people who have had similar problems.
Make sure you update the firmware if things aren't working as they should be...
Not as good as it should be
operating system:Not ApplicableI am in the process of connecting 7 fvs318 and 1 fvs328 in a vpn network and have to use static IP.
Following the wizard setup leaves the 318 not talking to the 328 and IKE on the 328 has to be edited as well as the IPSECs on the 318, we are just on the 1st pairing and though we have a one way traffic on the vpn there is no return, and as i write this we are in long discussions with the netgear call centre trying to resolve the problems, If i had known before i purchased these that netgear had outshipped its callcentre to asia I doubt if I would have purchased them (keep the jobs in europe!!!), also they require you to register the equipment online before they will give any support, great if you can't get online because the router won't work and they were quite snotty about it when i first called them. Another point is that the 328 and the 318 have completely different setup routines in them and though the side screen help and the manuals are quite good they still do not set up correctly even when you follow the instructions.
The firewall settings on the 318 are a lot less comprehensive than the 328, all in all if i wasn't commited to finishing this setup i would change to a different manufacturer.
Netgear support? What support? Try hell - more helpful!
operating system:Not ApplicableI wish I knew what the other guys are doing to get the VPN stuff sorted so easily. I've been wracking my brain for the last couple of days trying to get a simple laptop+modem to connect to our office over ADSL. 4 hrs after starting = VPN handshakes OK (stage 1 & 2) but can I figure out how to give the client a local IP address? Like hell.
3 hours of sitting on phone waiting, trying to get thru to "premium support" - every 45 minutes or so getting dumped over to US or EU support centers, which don't provide VPN support; so rejoin the support queue at the end!
I hope Netgear read this - it doesn't seem like there's any other way of communicating with them.
To sum up - product is fine (I assume it ain't broken - no way to tell for sure), but you're completely & UTTERLY screwed if you come across any difficulties.
Going to go buy a cisco...
