Very Good Product

Not ApplicableWhen I purchased the Belkin Universal UPS I was uncertain how complicated it would be to install device. I liked the look of the product specification: 800VA and a USB and serial port connections. Installation was a breeze. Charged the unit for 6 hours, plugged in the PC and monitor 13amp plugs into two of the units four sockets (3 battery supported, 1 surge protected) connected USB cable to unit and PC, switched on the PC booted-up and hardware self installed - checked power settings in Windows XP Contol Panel - there it was fully installed with its own power settings. Then loaded the Bulldog safe shut down software - again simple install.
Also supports Unix Operating Systems
Although it doesn't mention it in the product specification, the BullDog Sentry software to automatically shutdown a PC also supports various Unix operating systems. I managed to configure the UPS to automatically shutdown both my Linux server (Redhat 9) and Ultra 5 (Solaris 9). The software found on the supplied CD was a breeze to set up. Excellent product, shame a higher powered version of the UPS is not currently available.
Just get your credit card out and buy this... :-)

Not ApplicableI thought I was doing well, by having the family's data all kept together on a 15Gb Snap server on our home network... until a power cut ruined the partition table on the Snap drive and we lost the lot. So why did I not have a UPS? At just over £100, if you don't like the idea of losing your data, just buy this - I don't know why I didn't before.
Everything in the above 2 reviews is endorsed: run this under Linux, Windows (any), a Mac, whatever - you get a neat graphical interface on any of these.
And the one thing that isn't clear above is that this unit will comfortably run around three system units for long enough for all of them to shut down safely - you can install the Bulldog Plus software on all three and all will shut themselves down neatly - one acts as a master (connected via USB or serial - all leads are supplied), and the other two "slave" over IP. You get to choose all the delays before shutdown, etc. I tested mine out, using the software console to simulate a loss of power. My 400W base unit stayed running perfectly, and after 25 minutes there was still 40% battery left - I got bored and turned the mains back on.
If you don't want to install the software, then your OS probably already has the HID drivers installed to recognise the unit and self-configure to behave like a laptop with a rechargeable battery (when the juice is running out, it will warn you in advance then shut down before it goes flat). If not, then they are on the included CD.
Belkin have really thought this product through and they must be going like hot cakes.
Belkin Nice UPS Also the Software Rocks
os:
Not ApplicableThis UPS is housed inside a Metal case with 4 13AMP 3 Prong Power Outlet sockets! Includes One IEC cable to plug the unit into the mains electricity, One CAT5e RJ45 Cable to surge protect a network node, One RJ45 Telephone cable to protect a modem or telephone device, One USB Cable to connect to the PC / Server which its supplying power to and finally a Serial Cable to connect via a Linux or windows system if USB is not supported.
What I love about this UPS is the software I am going to be using this on two Web servers so it is crucial that they stay up and the UPS information is presented upon a webpage or live webpage as such. Guess what install the software and it's got its own web server. You can configure the server to operate on what port you like (Superb). You can use a network copy of the software (On CD) and a client version also (On CD) so this say could be in a school or large office environment and you can view the stats via a web server or the Bull dog software.
Good Points:
- Charges really fast compared to other UPS Devices.
- There are 13AMP sockets on the back of the device. (Saves you rewiring and using IEC Connectors!).
- RJ45 / RJ11 Surge protection (Network / Telephone Devices).
- Three Battery backup sockets.
- One Surge protection only (plug a monitor in and be sure that it will not drain the battery).
- Bulldog Software with Network compatible.
- Control the whole UPS system with the software web-base or GUI interface.
- Keeps your Power Safe and clean for all your toys...Erm Equipment.
Bad Points:
- When you first plug the UPS in you get a light humming noise like you would a dimmer switch on the wall or a large transformer. Also the humming gets louder when it's working off its battery when the mains electricity is off.
Comments
- That's it really folks, you can't really fault this device because it is really good for the money.
You will be surprised how good these things are buy one!
Excellent Linux support.

LinuxI installed this with a Compaq Proliant 1600 dual processor server running Redhat 9. Works very well. The software included installs very easily & even includes a System V startup/shutdown script which it installs automatically so you won't have to ammend your startup scripts in order for the monitor deamon to run on bootup. The software includes a web interface (as well as a local GUI) which you can use to remotely view the status of the UPS & set the shutdown times etc. I have an ADSL router/firewall, a switch, the server & a workstation with 17" monitor all running from this & it still only shows about 50% utilization. Very cool product.
Get this if you have a power-hungry system
os:
Windows XPMy system has a thermoelectric P4 cooler and a 550Watt Antec PSU running a P4 2.8GHz and a Radeon 9800Pro all running off this piece of kit.
Under high CPU load (DVD ripping) I get about 70% loading.
Excellent monitoring software...
Be careful not to plug something critical into the single surge protected socket!!
Buy one!!
Fantastic piece of kit
os:
Not ApplicableRuns 2 pc's and still says its half loaded. I didn't realise that it actually has standard 3 pin (you know uk type) sockets so instead of faffing arround with kettle leads you can just plug into this as you would a wall socket.... reall piece of kit!
Great

Windows XPWe purchased one of these to run a very important computer. Standard dell : P4 2ghz, 512mb ram, etc
This UPS has worked flawlessly, worked through several power outages and surges. Extremely easy to set up, failing abit of knowledge it can almost be a plug and play product.
As you can see, four sockets on the back make is universal, we have our PC and a D-Link switch plugged into it fine.
Highly recommended.
Excellant - using under Mandrake Linux
os:
LinuxFantastic product!
I'm using this with a home server running Mandrake Linux 9.2. Plugged the unit in to mains to charge over night, and then plugged everything in the following day.
Easy config using provided software on the bulldog CD for Linux.
Not had a powercut since :-) but have tested it out manually, and it's great. Linux immediately picks up that the powers missing, and starts a count down to shut everything down should it not come back on within a predefined time.
Highly recomended. Am going to buy another one now for my Destktop machine.
Great device, essential for any PC owner with a 450W PSU or less.
os:
Windows XPThese little boxes are brilliant for the price. We get quite a few blips or brown-outs round here, so these are practically essential. They also smooth out the mains voltage as well as provide battery back-up.
The software supplied is only designed to work with XP, not Vista, at the present time. But you don't need to install any software at all in order to use it - you just won't be able to monitor voltages or schedule a test. But the UPS has various coloured LEDs on it that light up if something's not right anyway.
I suggest you should plug your PC, external hard drive and modem/router into the three battery-backup sockets, and your monitor in the surge-protection only socket. Beware that some routers (like mine) won't fit if the lead comes out the top, as the opposing sockets are too close together.
Be aware that it does "buzz". You can't hear it with your PC on, but it is noticeable if you're trying to watch TV or listen to music with your PC off, even if the unit itself is on stand-by.
I can vouch for Belkin's Customer Support. I rang them last week when my Superior UPS stopped working. Instead of being kept in a queue, they rang me back a short while later. (I've since found out you can fill in a returns form on their website). I sent the unit back using their pre-paid RMA label. They promised to have a working one returned to me within five days. And they were as good as their word. Because they don't make the Superior model any more, they sent the next one up - this very model, the F6C800UKUNV - which means I now have two of them. 8)
I doubt you'll find them cheaper anywhere else. Ebuyer have a very competitive price, especially with the latest additional saving.
