Excellent piece of gear

Not ApplicableSetup
-----
Installing this product was a matter of seconds. I'm currently connecting Win98, Mac0s 9/X, Linux Debian Kernel 2.4.
I've easily upgraded the firmwire to 1.03.00;
Stability
---------
My ISP is freedom2surf.net and I have never experienced any disconnections in the three months I had this router.
Features
--------
Nat, Firewall and DHCP are working with no problems whatsoever. If you think of getting a router without a firewall - don't.
All other features seem to work as well.
Ease of use
-----------
Configuration is very easy. And the help side-bar on the configuration screen means you will probably never look at any manuals.
Customer support
----------------
Having called few times already, Netgear customer support (24/7 based in India for UK customers) will answer in seconds. The representatives are not amazingly fluent, but with a bit of help from their supervisiors you will always get an answer at the end. NOTE THAT IF YOU NEED LINUX SUPPORT, YOU WILL HAVE TO CALL THE AMERICAN SUPPORT LINE AND PAY AROUND 2$ A MINUTE - DISGRACE!. Also, Netgear support number is different from the one given on the router leaflet and it's now: 0870 1121206.
Linux
-----
With my Debian I had to install DHCP3-client to make it communicate with the router.
Cons
----
This router can only be configured using port 80. It's a shame that such a quality product does not come with the basic option of changing the configuration port. This will result in a problem if you are running virtual hosts behind this router (putting the address of www.mydomain.tld on a LAN computer will give you the router login dialog instead of your website). A work around this is to change the Hosts file (exists for Windows, MacOS, Linux).
All in all, an excellent product.
Great value for money and comes with a microfilter!

OtherAfter much research I bought Netgear. Why?
1. ADSL2/2+ compatibility
2. Well-known brand
3. Despite several poor reviews in the past, so many good recent reviews, and the product is into version 2.
Open the box and you find:
* The router, about the size of two stacked bars of chocolate and very attractive
* Its mains transformer
* Clip-on feet so you can stand the router on its end
* A microfilter. You don't need to buy one separately. EBuyer, please revise the description of this item to make this clear!
* Cat 5 LAN cable
* RJ11 modem/ADSL cable
* CD with documentation and startup wizard.
If you are accustomed to seeing all those hack attempts in ZoneAlarm then you will enjoy the lack of anything in your ZA logs after you install this. Set a new rule in the router to duplicate the preset Inbound rule but with logging, and there you'll see the old foes, hammering impotently on your nice NATed network.
Instead of buying wireless (slower than advertised, client overhead for encryption, questionable security), get yourself a crimper, some RJ45 plugs and some Cat 5, lift the carpet, and lay yourself a real network.
And remember: you cannot wardrive Cat 5.
Brilliant

Windows XPIf you want easy full control over your firewall, i reccomend this one by netgear. Its so simple to set up and configure i have seen a few newbies do it in seconds. It only comes with one filter mind you, so if you just got broadband i would buy a few 99p ebuyer extra value filters as they work perfectly. Its stable, gives great status reports and you can backup your setting to a file just incase ;). This is the router to buy dispite its UFO look
DG834
you need to install latest firmware to 1.04.01 this makes all your ports stealthed, passed all the tests at gibson research " shields up "
great product, very easy to setup and use.
Another awesome product by Netgear

Not ApplicableHeard a few things about this router being tricky to set up, decided to go for one anyway as I work in tech support....
I do not have a clue how anyone could struggle with this router!! It autodetects your connection type and settings and only asks you for your account details, then its connected and ready to go! As for the firewall, dead easy, just remeber if you forward a port to allow the service in the firewall config also. it really couldnt be any easier and if you struggle with that then maybe you should think about using a USB modem cos routers dont come much easier than this
TOP STUFF
Quality, Stylish and Reliable

Windows XPThis is a great piece of equipement. looks great aswell. i have connected 2 pcs to it and have had no problems with it so far. very reliable and for those concerned it is 100% compatible with AOL
Good product

Windows XPbought this on recomendation from two separate friends , was incredibly easy to set up and worked instantly once isp username and password input in to settings, configuration of it further was also very easy, very good and works perfectly for job provided
note though when i used a previous users recomended rule:
inbound rule: Any(ALL) | BLOCK always | Any | Any | Always
it caused MSN messenger to not be able to connect on the only computer have connected so far although it may work on your's, try it..
when i clicked on the link to netgears website for my router from the configuration pages it selected the wireless versions web-page instead (the DG834G) but easy enough to find this ones page just incase i needed new fimware (came with v1.05 preinstalled which seems to be the recomended with no faults one from previous comments)
have previously had a u.s.robotics router (quick find 44088) for a cable broadband connection rather than adsl connection (which i have now) which was tempramental at least when accessing the configuration utility (often just refused connection from computer to the utility and ftp settings just refused to work) although worked alright when just used to access the internet
Say goodbye to internet connection sharing
os:
Windows XPAbsolutley brilliant! Having suffered no end of problems with internet connection sharing, network not working, computers not connecting to the internet - endless restore operations etc. I decided to try one of these devices. First computer was on line within 5 minutes of opening box, second was slightly more problematical but a quick call to Netgear tech support had it working in no time.
Planning to add 2 more PC's to network at Christmas, do not expect to have any problems.
Very Pleased

Windows XPHave had this product for about a month now and I have had no problems. Easy to install and easy to modify ISP / Firewall settings.
IMPORTANT WARNING ABOUT FIRMWARE UPGRADE
Nota Bene the numerous warnings on the internet dated January 2004 about upgrading the firmware on the device. Apparently the latest version causes the unit to crash and it can't be restarted (or the firmwear reset to working)! I do hope that EBuyer pass this on as despite their being lumbered with more than 4000 of these units the first thing that most people will try to do is upgrade the firmware! Still worth 5 stars with the old firmware.
