This is a great peice of kit. If u have a laptop like mine with just usb 1.1 and no firewire this is ideal. Its does not require any drives under XP SP1. YOU NEEDED SP1 FOR USB 2.0 support or windows will cry!!!

The DC plug is not provided but is not required, i think it is used when u dont what to drain your laptop. however the pin in the socket of the DC jack does not look lined up there for u may have to bend the pin. HELL U DONT NEEDED IT ANY WAY.

Ebuyer Combo Cardbus

It is a safecom product. It comes in a bubble pack which containes the product. Absolutely nothing else. Having said that, it worked first time with XP. I have a firewire DVD writer, USB mouse and USB printer attached and all work perfectly. The power lead which plugs into a USB or PS2 (male and female and USB plugs are on the end of the cable) port is essential. None of my firewire or USB products worked without it. The Safecom website seems to say that the power lead needs to supply 5v if using USB and 12v for firewire. I don't see how this can be done without a separate cable and power source. What I can say is that the firewire ports work with the power lead plugged into USB. My DVD writer is mains powered so does not need a 12v supply. Don't therefore know if the 6 pin firewire will supply necessary power to a product like a pocket hard drive which draws power from the firewire cable.

Seems fine with XP SP2 for me...

It worked for me, 100 % as expected, with Windows XP (SP2) automatically installing the drivers without the need of the driver CD (or a driver download).

Really happy: with one card I can now connect both my new iPOD (firewire) and external hard drive (USB2.0). I just plugged it in and it worked - no drivers needed! (winxp)

works fine with Ipod

I use this card with no probs on my Ipod 40Gb using a firewire connection. The previous reviewer who had problems said that his laptop would recognise the iPod as a hard drive but not in iTunes. This would lead me to believe that he hadn't loaded the apple software properly.

Always go to www.apple.com/support/downloads/ipodupdater.html to make sure that your iPod is updated with the latest firmware.

Fantastic, works with Vista, no drivers, nothing. Connected my Sony Camcorder, fast and trouble free operation. Excellent value for a super card. And it has both 4 pin and 6 pin Firewire.

Especially for such a low price this is a great bit of kit. My crappy laptop comes with only 2 USB2.0 ports and no firewire. So getting this card so cheaply was great.
(Windows XP) No drivers required, just plug it in and start up and it worked fine; have never had any problems with it ever.
Haven't tried plugging in an additional adaptor yet though, so I'm not sure how well the FireWire charging thing works.

Found the problem...

Well, I've found out why I'm having problems and it's not this card - it's the Prolific PL-3507 combo chip used to provide the FireWire interface at the other end.

See my review of the Ebuyer caddy (Quickfind 72260) for the explanation, or go to:
http://www.bustrace.com/products/delayedwrite.htm
It's worth reading the story if you use ANY FireWire interface.

So my assessment goes up to 4 stars.

External Power

This is a great card (only 4 stars because no power supply or info for supply provided).

I did need to use the power socket to for some higher powered devices (probably due to having an older laptop).
Since there is no information about the socket provided I checked the voltage there is 4.5v across it, the pin is +ive and the outer part is -ive. This provides plenty of current for most USB devices.

No idea if this will help with firewire, which I think is 12v. Take care since you may damage the card.

Good, but issues with wireless

This card works fine on my Acer Aspire under Vista, however on occasion it will prevent my integrated wireless from working, which can only be remedies by disabling then re-enabling the wireless adaptor or by reboot.
