Functional Use without external power
review by: N Haymanrating:

I can confirm that THIS CARD specifies a supply of 500mA per port (In fact there is no socket to attach an external power supply).
So this will drive, in my case, my optical Intellimouse directly (100mA), without additional cables.
This is NOT the case with the cheaper eBuyer 'equivalent' card (which I replaced after if failed after 5 months, and used a USB through plug to supply the required power).
If you need more than 500mA (USB spec) then you will need to use a powered USB2 hub that can deliver more than the 500mA.
Comes well packaged with USB2 spec cable, manual and Driver CD, which should be installed fist to ensure you get USB2 speed drivers and not a USB1.1 one.

If you need more USB ports on your laptop, buy this!!

I have a Dell laptop (4150) which has only 1 USB port.

I had considered the (much cheaper) Ebuyer card but decided on this one instead.

Apart from a slight set-up glitch, the USB ports work just like they should. I was worried before ordering whether I would have to connect external power leads etc. as in the Ebuyer model, but this one doesn't need them, (it doesn't even have a socket to plug one in).

I have had a mouse, ADSL modem and a LED light all connected up with no power issues. I would imagine that most devices will work as long as they do not require massive amounts of power.

I can't comment on the speed as I haven't compared it to the USB 1.1 port yet, but I have no reason to beleive that it wouldn't run at full USB 2 speed.

As I mentioned earlier there was a slight glitch during installation. I ran the software disk and installed the drivers but then had to manually 'point' the hardware device to the correct driver file on the CD. After this I got the 'your hardware is installed and ready to use' message. This was probably just an issue with my laptop.

Note, one minor issue is that the card does stick out a fair bit from the card bus slot so I cannot leave it connected whilst in the carry case, but it's not a big problem.

All in all, well worth the money!

Works with Linux

I needed to add USB2 support to a very elderly laptop that has been given a new lease of life folowing an install of Linux - Ubuntu 5.10. Considered the cheaper ebuyer product but the power supply issues made me choose the D-Link and I'm very glad that I did. Inserted this card into the top cardbus slot and a Netgear WG511 wifi card squeezed into the bottom slot of the laptop. Powered the laptop up and everything just worked no drivers to install or configure. Both cards happily working with Ubuntu, far easier than with Windows. This is a credit to both D-Link and to the maturity of Ubuntu.

PS. Ubuntu is a totally free Linux distro available for free at www.ubuntu.com

just to make sure it is working on full USB2 speed.

Full speed ahead...

I installed the given drivers from the CD, and plugged the card in my laptop. However Windows being Windows, decides to find it's own drivers which only make the drive usb 1.1. However thanks to Fraser's previous post and link, I managed to get the full 2.0 speed.

Worked like a dream with my external CD writer, and can burn CD's in a fifth of the time it took normally with usb 1.1. Hoping also to uprade an external hard drive which should also work with this.

Not as cheap as the ebuyer home brand, but if your looking for a little bit more quality and still want a good buy, then I'd recommend this one.

I concur with the comments of the former reviewers. The product arrived a day early for me too, and it just worked.

The manual is clear and accurate and has screen shots of all the stages of installation (I was installing onto a Win98 SE machine), so even a bozo like me can't go wrong.

I have tried the card with both an external CD writer, which now works at 48x instead of the 8x I had with USB1.1, and with a ToUCam webcam.

It has given my elderly laptop a new lease of life.

Windows will automatically install its own software even if you install the D-Link software first as instructed. You will need to go into device driver and update the driver selecting the correct one. Windows will moan that the driver is not signed. D-link does have instructions on how to do this on the support web site. The Card will not work correctly until this is done. If you have problems with this try changing the PCMCIA slot in which the card is in.

This card works with external USB2 Hard drives however if the drive does not have a separate power source (powered through the USB) it is likely you will need an extra external powered USB 2 hub. I have not been able to get my external USB2 hard drive to work without one. D-link has a good one and it works very well with this card.

You may also experience Blue Screen if you are using VMWare (if you do not know what this is then you will not be using it). This appears to be exacerbated if you have the VM Machine on the USB drive and your run it from there. There appears to be a clash with the USB in VMWare and the USB drives for this card. To stop this crashing remove the USB ability of your VM Machines. This appears to stop the clash and there is not a problem running the VM Machine on the USB2 Hard drive.

Using Slackware 10.2 on a laptop from 2001 that had USB 1.1 only.

Plugged it in to the laptop, connected my camera (a Canon Digital Ixus 50) and run Digikam software (with Gphoto2 installed) which picked up the camera no problem.

I am using this with a NetGear WG511T wireless cardbus in the slot underneath it an they both work fine. They are not that tightly fitted in either.

As usual, ignore the system requirements. You don't need Windows.

Setting this device up was a bit naughty on Windows XP Pro, not only have you got alter the device drivers but the ones on the CD did not work either (Could be just my computer - Gateway 3525GB). Once I followed the following link that I aquired from an earlier reviewer it was away.
Done my head in a bit but was worth it in the end...
