Great 90% of the time
operating system:
Windows VistaAlso had the conenction dropping on this to 100mbs instead of the advertised Gb which is annoying as I have to go and unplug it and plug it in again to reset it and get my gigabit connection back once a week or so.
Just about to buy another gigabit switch and because of the above might not use one of these again.
Ok'ish, but they DO NOT LAST!!!
operating system:
Windows VistaI have owned two of these. They work "fair" speeds are not great (I'm running quad raid SCSI so not that). After a while you'll notice some of the ports stop working, then it will just keep rebooting.
If you buy cheap, don't expect high quality.
Avoid
operating system:
Not ApplicableAnother user mentioned these have stability issues of losing Gigabit connection after a machine reboots, with that machine connecting at 100Mbps speeds instead - I can confirm this. I recommend avoiding this switch as a result if you want Gigabit speeds - I'm using a variety of nVidia/realtek/Via/AMD Gigabit network adapters, and Cat6 cabling, and it has the same issue with all of them.
Work-around - swap cables around, but why should I need to? Utterly makes me lose faith in Netgear. I'm getting a replacement non-Netgear switch - I suggest you avoid this.
Intermittant 1GB Connection Issues
operating system:
Windows VistaI have had one of these switches for 6 months and like other posters here, I have also had intermittent issues with the 1GB connection (it drops down to 100Mb).
I raised it with Netgear technical support and they were useless - the first person I got a reply from said that the switch didn't even handle 1Gb, although clearly it does.
Jumbo Frames
1. I tend to ignore anonymous posts. No disrespect, but if you won't put your name to it then it doesn't give it much credence.
2. This is a 40 quid switch. Even equipment costing many times this much does not necessarily have jumbo frames support.
3. In many circumstances it may be beneficial (but certainly not always), but that doesn't mean people can't get substantial throughput on this switch. Indeed most soho users would probably never noticed the difference.
Jumbo Frames
File sharing and such benefit a lot from jumbo frames; 1500b MTU may well still get you on the order of 400Mbps but you'll be using a *tonne* of CPU just servicing interrupts, especially on the cheapo NICs most people have. Of course not everyone cares, but for those that do, it's good to know what does and doesn't support them.
SMC do an 8 port Gigabit switch which supports frame sizes up to 9k for around £75. If eBuyer can get the 5 port one in stock, it probably won't cost a lot more than this one.
Jumbo Frame Support
This clears it up: http://kbserver.netgear.com/kb_web_files/n101624.asp
GS105 V1 didn't have Jumbo Frame Support, GS105 V2 does and also adds L2 QoS & L3 QoS. Basically any one made after late 2005 supports Jumbo Frames.
Unstable units
These units at the moment have stability issues whereby on power up they work fine, but after changing settings on the computer or even just a reboot later the switch fails to connect at 1Gbs.<br />
I'm on my second unit now and it's no better.
Jumbo Frames
Does this switch have jumbo frame support or not?
Network cables
I am thinking of upgrading to this switch, and just wondered would i need to upgrade my router and cabling? I am running Cat 5 from downstairs out the back of a Lynksys WAG160N. Would i see an increase in performance in data transfer from my network hard drives and media pc's?
