The Back-Ups CS 650

Well what can be said about this item, it's excellent. First of all it comes with 2 grey cables to connect your pc/server and monitor to the ups, however it didnt come with an actual power lead to plug the ups into the mains, but you would use your existing pc one for this so theres no problems there.

As well as this you also get a usb cable and software on cd.

On first opening the unit you are instructed to connect the battery which is so very simple. After this I connected the power leads and turned the ups on, it went through a short self test while the pc was booting.

Once the system was booted I connected the usb cable to the computer and ups and it installed as a HID device, after this was complete xp treated this like a pc with a battery (like a laptop does). You can use this to do a basic setup allowing the pc to shutdown when the battery has decreased below a certain level which you can set.

In this case I decided to install the software, thus allowing me to tell the pc to shutdown after 1 minute without mains power. I decided this method was better incase of other power failures within the day, leaving plenty of battery power for 4-5 more shutdowns within the space of a day perhaps.

As well as this the software allows you to tell the ups certain things, like the minimum and maximum voltage you are happy with before it takes over power control, as well as telling you how many watts the connected equipment is drawing. You can even tell the ups not to make any bleeps during certain hours if there should be a blackout.

On conclusion, this device is worth every penny for its surge protection, £50,000 protected equipment warranty and 15 minutes to save your work or avoid corrupt files. Ive had ups's for many years and this one has all the features a home or office users would need - save work and shutdown safely.

ebuyer in this case havent provided very much information on this product, but if you search for item BK500EI you'll find the same specs as this device but with a lower power rating.

a superb purchase and highly recommended

I bought this as my first experience of a UPS of my own.

I've moved to a remote part of the Scottish Highlands and the power which Scottish Hydro Electric supply me here has a continuous barrage of spikes, power cuts and very brief voltage drops, sufficient to cause 'peculiar operation' - software crashes or lockups basically.

In four weeks the various power irregularities had killed four hard drives due to head crashes and the base PC was almost unuseable.

I bought this to try to protect what is left of my computer and within sixteen hours it had saved another hard drive from a head crash due to a power failure.

It's a beautifully made piece of kit, APC are clearly devoted to quality and their warranty shows how confident they are that their equipment does what it says on the box. A great buy from the UPS industry top name.

My PC which has a beefy PSU, seven power hungry hard drives, six fans plus a 21" TFT; all running from the UPS and it registers as using 188watts, and on battery the software reckons I would have about 12 minutes of backup time before battery exhausted (approx 7 hours recharge time). I've configured it to auto shutdown the software then the PC after 2 minutes if the mains power doesn't come back on.

My mains voltage shows around 246 Volts. It's handy to be able to see exactly what is happening with the APC software installed and logging all the irregularies - which could be useful in the event of a claim.

Adam Beasly wrote a superb review and I really only wanted to provide a second corroboration of his info.

A great piece of kit and if you have any doubts about the reliability of your power supply, or you leave your PC running the whole time, then it only costs about the same as a hard disk, but it will save all your data if there is a power failure.

I am so impressed I just bought another big brother to it, the APC BR1500I to give me a bit more working time. When that arrives, this one can then be used to protect the DVD recorder and my LCD TV. For that purpose it won't have the safe shutdown linkage it would have by software communication as with a PC, but the power shutoff to the equipment will be 'clean' and instant, and when the power comes on, the equipment won't get fried by a large voltage surge, which can often happen the moment power failures end.

Definitely recommended - and if you are looking at UPS's at all then you obviously have a reason for some concern. At this price can you afford NOT to buy it ?
