WPN111

Bought this in a kit bundled with the DG834PN and can confirm as follows:
1 do get 108MBps, and I am approximately 30 ft away from the router - through a ceiling and a couple of walls. A great improvement on my previous (DLink) router, although that was good enough. The bundled disc worked perfectly out of the box and I am FULLY WPA-PSK protected (worked first time for me) - Guess I am just lucky - Been running for 2 days solid with no disconnections and no appreciaable heat issues either - NOPE I don't work for netgear...just felt that this was a better piece of kit (with the DG834PN) than people have given it credit for. :o)

I've decided to spent a little extra for this one, coz I want something decent. Use to have a US Robotics adapter, this ones signal is slightly better and very stable. It does the job well. Running it on USB 1 at the moment, will see if I get 180Mbps if I plug it into a usb2 port. I'm getting my full 54Mbps 2 floors up.

Have used this with a Netgear router for several months with WPA and WPA2 on Win XP, SP2. It just works great. Installation took about 10 mins - it worked first time.

I get 108Mb connections and the product is very stable over 25 feet including a floor and a wall. It's at least 20 times more stable than my previous Linksys kit.

(I have no connect with Linksys. I was advised to use Netgear products by the tech team at a bank where I worked.)

To be honest if you got a desktop PC go for the WPN311 or if you got a laptop go for the WPN511, disappointed with this never seen it go to 108 mega bits, whereas I got a laptop using the WPN511 and I can get 108, form the same place tested as the WPN111, and it is more discrete doesn’t stick out as much, only bought the WPN111 "USB" so I can use it on a desktop or a Laptop, up to you to weigh the pros and cons.

Not Netgear's finest hour
review by: Anonymous os: Windows XP

OK, so this came free with my DG834PN Router (which is superb), but I expected better.

In common with others, I've never seen it connect at 108Mbps, even when right next to the router.

It also seems to randomly drop the wireless connection for no apparent reason - and also seems to get rather hot. I'm not sure if the two are related.

It would be quite a nice product if it just worked seamlessly, but sady it's not the case.

Unresolved bug

I'm sure you guys have read previous reviews about this device having a bug that causes blue screen crashes, system hangs etc.

I had this exact problem, this device has caused me so much stress and I tried everything to get it working. Latest drivers, using the Windows XP configuration option. Nothing worked.

My problem (apart from random crashing) was that if I tried to connect to an FTP site, or a device on my internal wireless network. It would completely crash my system.

I just received a different brand adapter, plugged it in and it is working perfectly.

Read the reviews carefully before choosing to buy this adapter! You have been warned!

Does NOT work if you use WPA-PSK

Well, if you are content to use the out of the box settings with a router and have no encryption, this seems to work. However, if you want to switch on WPA then you are stuffed. The CD in the box failed to even recognise the device. Updated software from Netgear.com was better, but still wouldn't connect to WPA router (also a netgear). How do they get away with this stuff? Did they do ANY testing?

Avoid.

Terrible

This is a poor device, only ever had 54mbps (not the 108mbps promised) on this from my wpn824 router and it keeps dropping the connection (every 10 mins or so). As I'm using this on a media centre, it is virtually useless, as is Netgears technical support.
I have put my old USR adapter back on and now getting 56mbps but at least the connection's not dropping all the time.
I like the router (once I got it working correctly) and the WPN511 I bought for the laptop, but this is very poor.
