Brillaint and SO quiet

os: Windows XP

I am running;
AMD64 3400 (768 socket)
2 x 512 Kingston DDR400's
Gigabyte K8NNXP (with DPS)
2 x IDE HDD's
2 x CD/DVD Drives
3 x Case Fans
GeForce 4 TI 4200 128DDR AGP GPU card

First of all, I didnt actually think the fan was working, so so quiet and you can hardly feel anything out of the fan, but its working alright. My computer just dropped a few dB's which is the first nice bit about this PSU.

Secondly, it comes with lots of cables which you can leave out to only have what you need which is good at keeping teh case that bit nicer and also they are wrapped up well in a casing to keep it all neat. The SATA, PCI-E and floppy connectors can all be left off if needed and incluedes the extra 4 pin power plug (not sure what its for, but is needed on my mother board)

As for the actual point of the PSU, it performs very well. My voltages are good on all rails and stay quite stable when under load (i tested with 'SpeedFan' graphs and 'Hot CPU Tester Burn-In'

Overal a very good PSU with all of the power needed, with ability to add components as necessary which is important for me when I go from AGP and IDE to PCI-E and SATA later this year. To top it off, you cant even notice its there. Very recomended

Nice, quieter power supply.

Bought this to replace the noisey power supply that came with my case. Mine is a kind of gun metal silver, which looks cool. The modular cables are great - no more messy, unused cables, so air flow is better. It is much quieter than the old 600w one.

It quite happily powers the following:

AMD X2 4200
ASUS M2NPV-VM
2 x 512 Corsair DDR2 PC5400
1 x 250Gb SATA
1 x DVD RAM Drive
1 x 80mm and 1 x 120mm fan
1 x ATI x1950Pro 256mb pci-e

Quiet

When people hear the word "silent" they automatically believe that the item in question is just that, silent. There are a lot of power supplies on ebuyer which claim to be silent and are in fact FAR from it. Now I have poor personal experiances with both Hiper (a noisey 'silent' power supply) and Antec (an old PSU which zapped everything in my old computer to death, not happy. Overpriced goods etc). But seeing as this power supply met my money restraints I decided to give Antec another try. Im glad I did.

Instead of claiming to be silent this power supply gives the facts, 18db, which is nice for a change. Unless your computer was build for the sole purpose of real silence (some water cooling options) you will be hard pressed to hear this power supply.

As for the problems with some motherboards. I hear that Antec have teamed up with the compan/y/ies in question and resolved the issues with firmware updates (assuming you have a power supply which you can use for the duration of the bios flash :P).

Pros
- Quiet
- Power saving, whatever that is :)
- Modular

Cons
- ...

P.S. Its black, not silver as pictured. Check the more images section for a picture.

Good PSU - The modular connections make it great for modding cases

This PSU looks great in my semi-transparent case, especially with the sylish connector cables. The fact that you only connect what you need improves internal aesthetics as well as airflow.

One small niggle - the 4-pin connector cables could be longer as it was a stretch in my case to connect a DVD drive, low case LEDs and, a lower case fan using the 2 cables supplied. As I could do this comfortably using my previous PSU, it has to lose a star for this!

Use older ATX boards ...
review by: Trevor Frewin os: Other

All,
I use an ASUS A7N8X Deluxe (20 pin Socket A board WITHOUT 4 pin VCore +12V plug) ... but there is a 'but'!

This equipment looks great and the build quality is obvious the moment you open the box. Installing it is an ultra-easy job and even the case screws are supplied ... fine attention to detail.

Right down to the quality plugs (with attachable/detachable 24pin->20-pin plug thingy).

I notice that Antec's site mention probs with Asus boards and this PSU - they suggest a BIOS upgrade and retry ...

... but ...

Installing this hardware into the case, plugging in everything I can (which is only the 20 pin plug of rht e24/20 pin plugset; the IDE supply units) ... turning on the power means the board responds with the 'ready state' (the green LED is on and stable - the board claims all is 100%) ... pressing the ATX 'on' switch means the fans all spin up (and immediately shut down) and that's where the excitement ends.

QUESTION: Can I use this power supply with a board that does not use separate VCore power input? My Asus Socket A board uses *only* the 20 pin connector.

NOTE: I am aware the 4 pin plug that can be detached from the 24 pin plugset is not interchangable with the 4 pin VCore +12V plug ... everything is well labelled on the product (see notes on fine attention to detail).

I specify only 3 stars (which is a shame for kit that looks like such great value for money) because the 'backward compatibility' *may* be limited and the manual does not cover detail like this at all.

Does anyone have any ideas where I can find details of the ATX standards and how they have changed over time?

Thanks!

Trevor

Neo HE430GB Problems
review by: Anonymous rating:

os: Windows XP

I tried to install this unit using a GigaByte 7-VAXP Ultra motherboard and had the same issue as mentioned Mr Frewin ie. the fans powered on and then the system closed down within 1-2 seconds.

I then fitted this unit to a GigaByte 7N400Pro Rev2 board and everything worked fine which confirmed the PSU to be working.

I then took the Antec TruePower 380W from my Sonata I case and fitted this to the 7-VAXP Ultra M/B which powered up as normal.

I have asked Antec for information on what is causing the problem with the Neo Unit.

BR Robert

May have problems with an Asus A8N series motherboard
review by: Anonymous os: Not Applicable

Many people have reported problems when attempting to use Antec Neo HE series PSU and Asus A8N series motherboards. The most frequent symptom is a sudden shutdown after a random period of use.

See:

http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=970367&page=1&pp=20

Antec and Asus claim to have worked together to fix the problem with the A3 revision of the PSUs and the 1.02 rev of the A8N motherboards, however some people are still reporting problems.
