Good product, be careful with fireware upgrade

os: Windows XP

Having ordered one of these for a client I set-up the box using the wizard, changed a couple of the DHCP setting and routes.

I found the Services and Rules pages did not work with the firmware shipped so tried to upgrade. Unfortunately it appears doing this on an active router does NOT work so the router died and a replacement ordered.

With the new router the firmware was upgraded in isolation and this seemed to work. Now, with the firmware upgraded, the Services and Rules (NAT) pages worked and so the router does it's job.

Seems ok. Have not tested the VPN access yet.

After the shock of this router being quite a bit larger than it looks in the images (Think an old, Full size VHS case!) I am now quite happy with it.

I bought 2 of these units and connecting them together via VPN was childs play using the built in VPN Wizard. This uses all the best security options, which is nice, and works a charm.

If you plan on using uPNP or a Syslog Server, give this a miss. Neither feature works properly, not even with the latest firmware and I have not had much help from Netgear either.

Speaking of Support, I suggest you call the 0870 number as the Internet support is terrible. Usual rightoff answers "Upgrade firmware to latest version" and "Factory Reset it and try again" are the best you get.

I have to say though, niggles aside, I am happy with the product and for a VPN Router, for the money you cannot buy cheaper with this level of security!

All I hope is that since it's a fairly new product, they will iron out the bugs and it will be a very good product.

Value For Money
review by: Eamon Straughn os: Other

I have purchased two of these amazing products so far and it is total value for money.

Netgear offers this product which is actually much cheaper to buy than its wired sister. Offers 8 VPN tunnels which I must admit takes days to get right if your inexprienced user. Wireless with this router is like magic, i'm often in the garden / car wiz-ing away and always recieve a strong signal. Although this router uses NAT you can still use Static IPs on it which is great if your a small business and have blocks of ips. Connect to your branch in swindon, scotland, france, usa where ever or maybe at home with fast response on the remote and local network. You can connect up to 8 offices on the same network with this device.

Think about it the next nearest product you will find is the netgear prosafe 24+ which is currently going for £234 with 100 VPN tunnels but no wireless.

I orginially purchased my first with Misco.co.uk but Ebuyer.co.uk is definately the best place to grab this offer ;-) its £7 cheaper and next day delievery as well, you'll need to order asap as this product seems to go out of stock very fast.
