What's a Mini-ITX Computer Case?

If you're in the market for a new computer case, then you've likely come across ATX form-factor cases: Micro-ATX, mid-tower ATX, and full-tower E-ATX. Mid-tower ATX is by far the most popular form-factor (simply look at the number of mid-tower cases we stock), while Micro-ATX is the smallest in size out of the bunch. But if you want to go even smaller than Micro-ATX, there's Mini-ITX.

As the name implies, Mini-ITX computer cases are designed for impressively compact 6.7" x 6.7" Mini-ITX motherboards. A lot is stripped out of Mini-ITX cases compared to mid-tower or even Micro-ATX cases. You can largely say goodbye to 3.5" hard drive and 2.5" solid-state drive bays, and there's considerably less room in Mini-ITX cases to install components and manage cables.

Why Should I Buy a Mini-ITX Computer Case?

These miniature computer cases take up a fraction of the space compared to run-of-the-mill mid-tower cases. This makes them a fantastic choice for those who're looking to build a PC that's small enough to fit in a television cabinet, but is also powerful enough to run the latest gaming releases at higher-than-console settings.

Mini-ITX computer cases are also quite portable, at least compared to ATX form-factor cases. There's Mini-ITX cases out there which can fit in a regular-sized backpack, perfect for a university student who's wanting to bring their PC home over the summer break easily, for example.

And, of course, there's many people who simply prefer the look of a compact, small-factor computer. With modern, power-efficient hardware, it's astonishing just how much performance you can cram into a Mini-ITX case. Isn't the concept of a fully-fledged gaming PC that's small enough to fit in a backpack enticing? Plus, if you've got a small desk, Mini-ITX cases free up space for keyboards, mice, and streaming gear.

Mini-ITX Computer Cases - Hardware Compatibility

Building in a Mini-ITX computer case can often feel like playing a real-life game of Tetris. As everything's packed so closely together, you must rotate and orientate components in-and-around other components to install them. Not to mention the cables. It's not like you have the luxury of a spacious ATX form-factor case, where you can stuff all the power supply's cables under the power supply shroud and call it a day.

So, if you're looking to build in a Mini-ITX case, it's crucial you check your hardware is compatible. Dimension clearance is incredibly tight in these miniature computer cases. You need to, for example, not only account for the thickness of an all-in-one water cooler's radiator, but its thickness with fans attached, too.

Most hardware out there is designed with ATX form-factor cases in mind, which boast plenty of room for hardware that's on the heftier side. You'll have little chance of fitting a triple-slot, triple-fan graphics card or an enormous CPU cooler in a Mini-ITX case, on the other hand. Rather, keep an eye out for hardware described as "low-profile" or "SFX" (small form-factor) as it's more likely to fit. We'd also strongly recommend picking up a fully modular SFX power supply to keep cable clutter to a minimum.
