Why Should I Buy a Desktop PC?

Whether it's for work or play, there's plenty of reasons to buy a desktop computer. From top-of-the-line performance to upgradability and repairability, as long as you've got the space for a desktop set-up, a desktop PC can offer a superior computing experience to a laptop in many ways.

Performance

Despite the popularity of gaming laptops, gaming desktops remain the weapon of choice if you want the best in raw gaming performance. Especially if, of course, you don't care about portability.

Without the power and cooling limitations of laptops, desktops can handle much more power-hungry components with heftier thermal solutions. You can't fit a triple-fan, watt-guzzling graphics card in a laptop, but you can in a desktop.

Upgradability and Repairability

Unlike laptops, the core components of desktops are readily available for purchase and can easily be swapped out. This means that you can breathe new life into a desktop PC, even long after its warranty has elapsed.

Let's take the CPU of a laptop, for example. If the CPU were to fail, or you wanted to upgrade it to something faster, you can't just swap it out for an off-the-shelf replacement. The CPUs and GPUs of laptops are soldered directly to a mainboard, and these mainboards are only available from the manufacturer as part of a replacement under warranty.

With a desktop PC, on the other hand, you'd be able to head on over to a computer hardware retailer like Ebuyer, pick up a replacement processor, and install it yourself. Desktops can have significantly longer lifespans as a result, saving you money in the long run.

Customisation

With a laptop, you're in essence stuck with its built-in keyboard, trackpad, and display. Sure, you could hook up an external keyboard, mouse, and monitor, but that'd add bulk to what's supposed to be a portable device - not exactly ideal if a lack of space was your main reason for buying a laptop. While we stock a fantastic range of 2-in-1s, thin-and-lights, and gaming laptops, desktops simply offer more scope for personalising your computing experience.

What Do I Need to Look for in a Desktop PC?

If you're in the market for a new desktop computer but aren't sure what to look for, it's best to start with the central processing unit (CPU). Essentially, the CPU is the brain of a computer. The faster the CPU, the faster a desktop PC will perform. It's likely to be the most expensive component of a desktop for many users and, in turn, the most expensive to upgrade later. So, make sure you buy a desktop PC with a CPU that meets your needs from the get-go.

CPU

For basic day-to-day tasks like web browsing and video streaming, a desktop computer with an Intel Core i3 or AMD Ryzen 3 CPU is all you really need. If you're wanting to play the latest gaming releases, however, then you'll want to step up to an Intel Core i5 or AMD Ryzen 5 CPU, though an Intel Core i7 or AMD Ryzen 7 CPU is better still. Lastly, there's ultra-fast, ultra-high-core-count Intel Core i9 and AMD Ryzen 9 CPUs, which excel in CPU-heavy creative and professional workloads.

RAM and GPU

The amount of RAM in a desktop PC and whether it's got a dedicated graphics card is also important, especially for running those graphically demanding games. We recommend heading over to each component's page for further information.

In short, 8GB of RAM is really the bare minimum for desktop PCs nowadays, with 16GB of RAM being the price-to-performance sweet spot for gamers and casual users alike. 32GB-or-more of RAM is more for creatives and professionals who use memory-hungry applications on the daily.

And if you want to enjoy big-budget games at their absolute best on a high-res monitor or TV, a desktop PC with a powerful dedicated graphics card from either NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel is a must.

SSD and HDD

Storage is something to bear in mind, too. Practically all desktop computers on the market today come with solid-state drives (SSDs) for storage purposes, as opposed to hard drives (HDDs). SSDs are digital storage devices, not mechanical storage devices like HDDs with their spinning platters, and they're considerably faster as a result.

If you handle a lot of media files, you'll naturally want a desktop PC with as much storage as possible. Entry-level desktops usually include 256GB or 512GB SSDs, with 1TB SSDs being the norm at the mid-range. Fortunately, even if you do find yourself running low on storage, these internal storage devices are one of, if not the easiest parts of a desktops PC to upgrade. External SSDs and external HDDs are even easier to use, plugging right into a USB port on your desktop PC.

What's the Best Desktop PC?

It's impossible to say what's the outright 'best' desktop PC as everyone will want something different from their computing experience. Some may value power efficiency, acoustic performance, and a compact chassis over raw multi-threaded CPU performance, for instance.

That said, if you want respectable performance in a range of applications (without completely breaking the bank either), we recommend a desktop computer with a modern Intel Core i5 or AMD Ryzen 5 CPU, 16GB of RAM, and a 1TB SSD. Pick one with a mid to high-end dedicated GPU if you're looking to game, too.
