What is a M.2 SSD?

2.5" SATA solid-state drives outclass all mechanical hard drives when it comes to speed. However, their performance is limited by the decades-old SATA interface, which is capped to 600MB/s. What's more, 2.5" SATA SSDs require separate cables for data and power, making them a bit fiddly to install for the novice computer user.

M.2 solid-state drives, on the other hand, don't need to be mounted in a laptop or computer case's 2.5" drive bay. They're incredibly small and install directly into a M.2 slot on your motherboard - no cables required. With an M.2 SSD, you can get terabytes' worth of internal storage in a device roughly equivalent in size to a stick of gum. This makes M.2 SSDs ideal in thin-and-light laptops (in turn allowing for bigger batteries), small form-factor desktops with little to no 2.5" drive bays, and for those who favour minimal cable management.

It's worth noting M.2 simply denotes the form-factor of a solid-state drive - not a drive's interface protocol. Although it's not common, you could, for instance, have a solid-state drive in the M.2 form-factor which uses the SATA interface for data transfer. For those who're after the fastest performance possible, then you'll want to look at NVMe M.2 SSDs, as opposed to SATA M.2 SSDs and SATA 2.5" SSDs.

What is NVMe?

Non-volatile memory express, or NVMe for short, is an interface protocol built from the ground up to capitalise on high-bandwidth, low-latency flash storage devices, such as solid-state drives. With NVMe, data's transferred via your motherboard's lightning-fast PCIe bus - the same bus used by a dedicated graphics card.

As a much newer interface - one that wasn't designed with old, antiquated hard drive technology in mind - the capabilities of NVMe dwarf SATA. Even your budget, run-of-the-mill NVMe SSDs boast speeds in the thousands of MB/s, with the latest PCIe Gen5 NVMe SSDs hitting blisteringly-fast speeds in excess of 10,000MB/s. That's over sixteen times faster than SATA-powered SSDs, never mind HDDs.

Is a M.2 SSD better than a 2.5" SSD?

In short, yes. But to reiterate, M.2 denotes a drive's form-factor. It doesn't describe its performance. For that, you'll have to look at its interface protocol: SATA, PCIe Gen 3, PCIe Gen4, and so on. Most M.2 SSDs happen to be NVMe SSDs, however.

The small, compact size of a M.2 SSD will allow you to save some space in your computer case. And slotting your solid-state drive right into your motherboard removes the need for excess cables, too, making cable management all that easier.

Invest in a high-performance NVMe M.2 SSD and you'll definitely notice an improvement in your system's overall responsiveness, or 'snappiness'. An NVMe SSD is even better than a SATA SSD (which is already vastly superior to a HDD) at all those storage-related workloads, from hefty file transfers to boot and loading times.

M.2 SSDs have quickly become the de-factor standard storage solution and their prices are continually falling. Browse Ebuyer's range of M.2 SSDs and you'll find you can pick up a basic, yet fast, 1TB PCIe Gen3 NVMe SSD for under £50. That's more than enough capacity and speed for most peoples' needs.

How to choose a M.2 SSD

First, check what M.2 SSDs your motherboard's M.2 slots support - or if your motherboard has any M.2 slots at all. A PCIe Gen5 drive requires a PCIe Gen5 compatible motherboard to run at its highest rated speed, for example. That said, PCIe NVMe M.2 drives are technically both forwards and backwards compatible. You can run a PCIe Gen4 drive in a PCIe Gen3 slot, though it'll accordingly be capped to PCIe Gen3 performance. Intel and AMD's budget-oriented motherboards tend to feature at least one M.2 slot, while their premium, high-end models come equipped with several M.2 slots.

It's also worth thinking about whether you really need the latest-and-greatest PCIe NVMe M.2 SSD, or if a slower, cheaper model will serve you well enough. On paper, the ultra-fast speeds of a PCIe Gen5 drive are undoubtedly impressive. When it comes to the drive's real-world performance, however, these speeds may only shave a few seconds off a game's loading times compared to a PCIe Gen4 drive. And if you're only using a computer for day-to-day tasks, like web browsing and word processing, an entry-level model with speeds around the 2,000 - 3,000MB/s mark will still be plenty fast.
