What Can Smartwatches Do? - A Quick Guide to Smartwatches

Smartwatches represent the biggest update to the humble wristwatch in quite some time. And given that they're essentially miniature smartphones, smartwatches can do a lot more than just show the time. Here's a few examples.

Customisability

Being a smart device, a smartwatch can be configured to present the user with a lot more useful information at once. You could, for instance, have the weather forecast right alongside the time, as well as an indicator for an upcoming calendar event. The design of a smartwatch's face can be customised, too. So if you're getting a bit bored with the look and feel of your smartwatch, you can easily swap it out for something fresh. And with adjustable brightness displays, it's easy to see what's on your smartwatch, whether you're in direct sunlight or pitch darkness.

Answer Calls and Read Texts

When paired with your smartphone, you'll be able to answer calls and read texts on a smartwatch. If you're someone who's bombarded with calls and texts day-in, day-out, a smartwatch can help you keep on top of it all. Let's say you're stuck in the middle of a meeting and can't get to your phone. Whenever a message comes in on your smartphone, it'll also pop up on your smartwatch, so you'll never be out of the loop.

Alerts and Notifications

Smartwatches put all your phone's notifications and alerts right on your wrist. This'll save you from having to pull your smartphone out of your pocket every time you feel it buzz. With a smartwatch, you can instead just glance down at your wrist to see if it's a notification worth responding to, or if it's simply a marketing email you can safely ignore.

Control Your Phone

Similar to above, you can control whatever's playing on your smartphone via a smartwatch. Listening to some music while out on a walk and want to turn the volume down a notch? No need to fiddle around in your pocket for your smartphone's volume rocker - just adjust its volume on your smartwatch. What's more, many smartwatches are compatible with virtual assistants, so you can control your music, smart home devices, and more, all hands-free.

Fitness Tracking

On top of all this functionality, smartwatches also make for excellent fitness tracking devices. Depending on your exercise of choice, a smartwatch may be all you need to monitor your health and fitness. Most smartwatches on the market track your heart rate, step count, and miles travelled at the minimum, with higher-end watches offering advanced capabilities, like blood oxygen detection. There's smartwatch versions of the top fitness apps, like Strava, which are perfect for tracking and personalising your workouts.

The Right Features for You

There's a lot of choice in today's smartwatch market, so be sure to choose a device with the features you need. We'd describe most smartwatches as an extension of your smartphone. On the other hand, some smartwatches lean more into health and fitness tracking. If this is all you're looking for in a smartwatch, however, you may be better of with a dedicated activity tracker, which can usually monitor your health and fitness with a higher level of precision. And if you just want the basics, there's plenty of affordable smartwatch options, too.

Smartwatches at Ebuyer

Here at Ebuyer, we stock smartwatches in a range of colours and styles from brands you can trust, like Apple.

While it wasn't the first smartwatch to hit the market, in typical Apple fashion, the Apple Watch was the first consumer smartwatch to refine and popularise the concept when it launched in 2015. Since then, the Apple Watch has gone on to become the best-selling smartwatch by a significant margin. Do note, however, that an Apple Watch won't work with an Android smartphone. Apple Watches are, as you'd except, designed for use with Apple iPhones.

If you want your new smartwatch by tomorrow, next-day delivery is available. We also offer finance packages for added flexibility. And don't forget the Ebuyer Price Match Promise - we won't be beaten on price.
