What is the RTX 4070 Ti?

NVIDIA unveiled the RTX 4070 Ti at their 'Beyond GeForce at CES 2023' event. Technically, however, this wasn't the first time we got eyes on this RTX 40 Series graphics card. Look at the RTX 4070 Ti's spec-sheet and you'll see it lines up exactly with the 'unlaunched' RTX 4080 12GB. We've detailed why NVIDIA decided to 'unlaunched' the 12GB version over on the RTX 4080 16GB's page which, as of now, is the only 80-class RTX 40 Series graphics card on the market. Expect the inevitable RTX 4080 Ti sometime in the future. Long story short, the RTX 4070 Ti is a renamed and repriced version of what once was the RTX 4080 12GB.

Specs-wise, the RTX 4070 Ti is somewhat more in line with what we'd expect from a 70-class NVIDIA graphics card. While the RTX 4090 is based on NVIDIA's flagship AD102 chip, and the RTX 4080 the AD103, the RTX 4070 Ti uses the AD104 chip. This translates to 7,680 CUDA Cores, 60 RT Cores (hardware-accelerated raytracing), and 240 Tensor Cores (faster AI performance). For comparison, the RTX 4080 is equipped with 9,728 CUDA Cores, 76 RT Cores, and 304 Tensor Cores. What's more, the RTX 4080 features 16GB of GDDR6X VRAM running on a 256-bit memory interface, while the RTX 4070 Ti is instead paired with 12GB of GDDR6X on a smaller 192-bit interface. With it not even being based on the same chip, you can probably see why NVIDIA rebranded this graphics card to the RTX 4070 Ti.

Nonetheless, the RTX 4070 Ti, like all RTX 40 Series graphics cards, is built on NVIDIA's ground-breaking 'Ada Lovelace' architecture. As you'll see below, this 3rd-generation RTX architecture is ultra-efficient. It introduces new streaming multi-processors for up to twice the performance compared to the previous generation, 4th-gen Tensor Cores for up to twice the AI performance, and 3rd-gen RT Cores for up to twice the raytracing performance.

RTX 4070 Ti Power Consumption & Form Factor

Seeing as it's using a smaller chip, the RTX 4070 Ti doesn't require as large as of a power supply as the higher-end RTX 40 Series graphics cards. According to NVIDIA, the RTX 4070 Ti consumes just 226W on average while gaming. That's 43% less power than the RTX 3090 Ti, which consumes 398W. NVIDIA rates the RTX 4070 Ti at a Total Graphics Power (TGP) of 285W, recommending at minimum a 700W PSU to power a whole RTX 4070 Ti-equipped gaming PC. This power is drawn through either a 300W-or-greater PCIe Gen5 cable or 2x PCIe 8-pin cables with the included adapter.

Unlike the RTX 4090 and RTX 4080, there's no reference NVIDIA design for the RTX 4070 Ti. As such, the length, width, and slot size of the RTX 4070 Ti varies by add-in board partner. Some RTX 4070 Tis might use a dual-slot cooling solutions, while others might be even bigger. It's all down to the manufacturer. 4070 Ti vs RTX 3090 Ti

At the RTX 4070 Ti's debut, NVIDIA didn't share many performance figures. While they compared the RTX 4070 Ti to last-gen's flagship RTX 3090 Ti, claiming that it's even faster, this was with DLSS Frame Generation enabled. Which the RTX 3090 Ti doesn't support. DLSS 3 and DLSS Frame Generation, which generates entirely new frames to multiply performance by up to 4x over native rendering, is exclusive to RTX 40 Series graphics cards. Without DLSS 3's AI-generated frames in the mix, a fairer comparison to the RTX 4070 Ti would be more towards the RTX 3080. Looking at performance figures released by NVIDIA for the 'unlaunched' RTX 4080 12GB (now the RTX 4070 Ti), it's a bit behind the RTX 3090 Ti at a native 4K resolution in games without any form of DLSS.
