Xbox Series S vs Xbox Series X

The Xbox Series S isn't just a disk-less version of the Xbox Series X, a la the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition. Not only does it omit a disk drive, but the performance of the Xbox Series S is cut back, too.

While the console's CPU is the same as the Xbox Series X's (albeit clocked a tad slower), the GPU and memory take a bigger hit. Xbox Series S's GPU features 20 Compute Units at 1.6GHz, compared to the Xbox Series X's 52 CUs at 1.8GHz. Memory is reduced from 16GB on the X to 10GB on the S, and this is arguably the Xbox Series S's biggest bottleneck.

Despite this hardware discrepancy, the Xbox Series S can play all the same games as the Xbox Series X, just at a lower graphical fidelity. Certain features of a game may not run on the Xbox Series S, as is the case with Baldur's Gate 3's split-screen mode, for example.

So, if you just want to play the latest gaming releases and aren't too concerned about resolution and frame rate, the Xbox Series S is by far your cheapest option. Paired with Xbox Game Pass, it's an astonishing value for money. For those looking to experience games at their absolute best on a 4K TV, however, go for the more powerful Xbox Series X.

What's Xbox Game Pass?

Xbox Game Pass is Xbox's take on a subscription service. You can think of it as the Netflix of games. For a monthly fee, you get access to an extensive catalogue of games - hundreds, in fact - with new ones added each month. Xbox's exclusive, first-party titles debut day-one on the service. So rather than forking over £70 for the new Halo, you can just play it through Xbox Game Pass, saving you a chunk of change.

Storage Expansion Cards for Xbox Consoles

Unlike the PlayStation 5, the Xbox Series X and S do not feature upgradeable internal storage. Instead, Xbox Series consoles rely on proprietary 'storage expansion cards', licensed to and manufactured by Seagate and Western Digital.

Inserting into the back of the console like a flash drive, these storage expansion cards are incredibly easy to use. You don't have to worry about compatibility, either. They're just as fast as Xbox Series X and S's internal solid-state drives.

This convenience comes at a price, however. Even after a price cut, Xbox Series storage expansion cards still cost more than an off-the-shelf SSD of the same capacity. Keep this in mind if you're thinking of buying the 512GB Xbox Series S.

Xbox Controllers

Need an extra controller for some local split-screen action? We stock Xbox Wireless Controllers in a range of colours and styles. And if you're after something more premium, take a look at Xbox Elite Wireless Controllers, which feature tension-adjustable sticks, back paddles, hair triggers, and more.

Also, it's worth noting that the Xbox Wireless Controller (bundled with Xbox Series X and S) takes AA batteries. Some see this as a positive, some see it as a negative. Regardless, Xbox Wireless Controllers include a couple of AAs to get you started, though we recommend investing in a few rechargeable AAs.
