What is a dual core processor?

A dual core processor is a central processing unit (CPU) which has two separate cores, each with its own individual cache. In a nutshell, it is two microprocessors in one. Many manufacturers including Microsoft, ASUS and HP manufacture this type of CPU. Quad-core processors are also available and these, as you would expect, have four cores each. There are also processors with eight or more cores available too.

Benefits of a dual-core processor?

Efficiency is improved massively with a dual-core processor, as each core handles incoming data strings simultaneously. They say two heads are better than one, and with dual-cores, your PC can operate much more effectively. With a dual-core processor, the cores live on the same chip but in a multi-processor system, the system is much faster as the work is shared out via two separate CPUs which have their own resources. In very simple terms, a multi-processor is faster than a dual-core system, and a dual-core system is faster than a single-core system.

Dual-core benefit

A good thing about dual-core processors is that they do not require new motherboard. They can be used in existing boards as long as they have the correct connection sockets. You will really notice the difference in performance when you are multi-tasking. If you are in business, then you will see big benefits with servers that are running multiple dual-core processors.

CPU quality

The quality and design of a CPU system really influences the performance of your computer. Generally speaking, computers are assumed to have a single processor unless otherwise stated. In recent times, multi-core processors have been introduced and these include two or more cores for extra efficiency and speed. If a computer has four cores, it is a quad-core processor, whilst one which has two cores is known as a dual-core processor. A dual-core processor has several advantages over a single-core processor.

More effective

With a dual-core processor, you are going to benefit from a performance gain over a single-core laptop. Exactly how much of an improvement comes down to the hardware, the software and the particular type of task you are doing at the time. As an average, the improvement is likely to be in the region of 50%. Improvements with individual applications will depend largely on whether the software is optimised for dual-core processing. Without it, the improvement will be less.

Add core to increase performance

There are several methods which can increase the performance of your computer, but adding core is more advantageous. Firstly, it can be done without any side-effects of scaling the clock rate which generates more waste heat, which in turn makes the design and building of processors more complicated and expensive. Secondly, some of the alternatives (such as increasing L2 cache and adding L3 cache) have already been maxed out, and have got as far as they can go.

Battery power

If you have a dual-core processor, then one of the advantages is that your battery uses less power. You have the capability to put one of your cores to sleep if it is not needed for a particular task, or you can tweak it to save power. Other advantages include better multi-tasking and the gaming experience is improved.

Big brands and Pentium

Pentium dual-cores are used by the leading brands, including: ASUS, Microsoft, Acer, HP, Lenovo and more. Here at Ebuyer we stock them all.
