Which Nintendo Switch Should I Buy?

The original Nintendo Switch debuted back in 2017. Since then, Nintendo has seen fit to release two hardware revisions of the popular game console: the handheld-only Nintendo Switch Lite in 2019, and the higher-end Nintendo Switch OLED in 2021. We've got all three Nintendo Switch revisions here at Ebuyer, but which one's best for you? Let's find out.

Nintendo Switch Lite

Out of these Nintendo consoles, the most distinct is the Nintendo Switch Lite. Unlike the regular Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch OLED, the Nintendo Switch Lite lacks the ability to, well, 'switch'. It cannot be docked to a television, nor are its controllers detachable. The Nintendo Switch Lite is a handheld console through and through, like the DS and Game Boy before it.

It's only possible to play the Nintendo Switch Lite in handheld-mode. This can present some issues. While the Nintendo Switch Lite will play the overwhelming majority of the Nintendo Switch's library just fine, there's a small selection of games that can't be played in handheld-mode as they require Joy-Con controllers for motions controls. These games will still technically run on the Nintendo Switch Lite, but they require external Joy-Cons for input, and they'll be forced to run in television-mode. This may make these games hard to play given the Nintendo Switch Lite's small 5.5-inch display.

Otherwise, the Nintendo Switch Lite makes for a fantastic little portable console. It's arguably the most durable Nintendo Switch as its controllers can't be detached and accidentally reattached in the wrong way, perfect for younger children. The Nintendo Switch Lite is cheaper than the regular model, too. And, crucially, every Nintendo Switch revision is based on the same internal hardware, so they all play the same games.

Nintendo Switch OLED

By comparison, the Nintendo Switch OLED is more what you'd expect from a hardware revision. Really, it's just the regular Nintendo Switch but better in practically every way.

As the name implies, the main upgrade of the Nintendo Switch OLED is its super-high-contrast OLED display with deep, rich blacks. It's a substantial upgrade over the so-so LCDs of the other Switches. The Nintendo Switch OLED isn't any more powerful than these models, but its display alone makes games look even more visually impressive. Coming in at 7-inches, it's larger than the regular Switch's 6.2-inch display, too. Despite this, both Switches' dimensions are exact same, so Joy-Cons can be used on either model without issue.

There's a bunch of additional upgrades which make for an all-round better gaming experience. First of all, internal storage is doubled from 32GB on the regular Nintendo Switch to 64GB on the Nintendo Switch OLED, though this can always be boosted further using the consoles' microSD card slots. The kickstand of the Nintendo Switch OLED spans the entire length of the device, resulting in more stable tabletop play, and the OLED's chassis in general feels more premium. Not to mention that the speakers are upgraded on the OLED model.

Do I Need to Pay to Play Online on Nintendo Switch?

Yes, you need an active Nintendo Switch Online membership to play most Nintendo Switch games online, and this is a paid subscription service. Not all games require Nintendo Switch Online for internet multi-player, mind you. It's limited to paid-for games. Free-to-play games like Fortnite, for example, don't require Nintendo Switch Online. It's also worth noting that Nintendo Switch Online includes other benefits, such as access to a library of classic Nintendo Games. You aren't just paying for the privilege to play online, though it's the main benefit.

Nintendo Switch Controllers and Accessories

If we had to choose the most family-friendly console out of the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch, it'd quite easily be the Switch. Not only because Nintendo's core game franchises are designed for all ages, but also for the fact that many of the Switch's games support local split-screen multi-player: Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Super Mario Party, Super Mario Bros. Wonder, and many more. What's so great about the regular Nintendo Switch and the Nintendo Switch OLED is that their left-and-right Joy-Cons can be detached as used as two individual controllers. So, these Nintendo consoles are always ready for some two-player fun. But if you've got more than two players, you can pick up some extra Nintendo controllers at our store.
